Speak Now (2010) All Songs Ranked
2020.09.23 18:28 CyrusWaughSpeak Now (2010) All Songs Ranked
It's time for part 3 of Appreciation Week and we've finally enter the Speak Now era of Taylor Swift's career. I can tell online, and from my friends perspectives this is a fan favorite, so when I do my ranking don't get triggered about it, for all I know my opinion could be the exact opposite of yours, which is a good thing, but lets be intellectual about this rather than emotional. This was a weird time imo, the mainstream sound of music was in the R&B party anthem phase, where groups like The Black Eyed Peas and LMFAO thrived, given this new wave, Speak Now definitely felt like the odd one out in terms of sound. Not to mention creeping slowly was the bro era of music, so while I do hold this record to a high regard it feels out of place timeline wise. 14. Better Than Revenge To sum up my distaste for this track, is pretty simple: I'm not a fan of alternative rock, so this isn't going to be my cup of tea, but still its a fun time, where she takes a jab at Camilla Beller, in a way its a sequel to Forever & Always from the previous record on the Joe Jonas breakup, I can't help but feel awkward listening to this, but keep in mind these are really personal issues for me, there are some who crave this sort of storytelling and instrumental style, the second verse definitely kicks things into high gear for me though when she tries to show their perspective of her, and it is well done, overall I think the song gets a little too repetitive, they could've made the song a little shorter to eliminate that issue. 13. Story Of Us Pretty similar thoughts here, the style of this music isn't for me. But unlike Better Than Revenge, this song definitely needs to be this length, the progression feels so smooth, and this is why I don't date someone in the same class, sport or job, because if/when you break up it is extremely awkward, and that awkwardness is captured here, there is a lot to like about this song, no I don't hate this song, I just have some problems with it, I'll let you know when we get to the record where there are songs I genuinely dislike. If punk/alternative is your style, then I'd recommend this as a fun middle lane for you. 12. Haunted That opening with the orchestra is so bombastic, so provocative, I love it, I think my number one issue with this song is that it relies too much on the chorus, and could use more verses given this song is 4 minutes long. From what I've gathered this has to do with guilt of wanting to be with someone you've been cold to. And even though she's with someone new, she can't help be reminded of this person. I think its pretty good in terms of messaging as she takes a hypocritical stance, of leaving someone in a dramatic manner, and overtime want them back to finish what they started. This could've used a better storytelling perspective, but the bombastic production makes it hard to realize that issue, the music builds up so well by the bridge, so instrumentally it is way up there, and it just has the short end of the stick when it comes to the writing. 11. Sparks Fly I think metaphorically, this is a little disjointed, while I get what she is saying when she compares herself to a house of cards and he's a rainstorm, they are two completely different thing so this could've used a small revision. From what I've heard, this song actually went through several revisions both lyrically and instrumentally, they cut out the banjo to get a more pop-rock sound and from a business sense, I respect the decision, she was getting bigger and bigger and she had to keep up with the times, fiddle, banjo and steel were becoming less prevalent to casual listeners who adored her. So they began experimenting with sounds and melodies, melodically they nailed this but I can tell there was a shift in quality for the writing and instrumentation of this track. 10. Mine Crucify me for not putting this higher. I think this is the catchiest track on the record. But it really feels formulaic to me, and I'll argue lyrically the last 2 records inspired the modern Nashville writing style, I'm not saying Taylor's done it as bad as they did, she is light years ahead of them, but her style of narrative definitely carried into acts like Thomas Rhett, FGL and Luke Bryan in later years. My favorite lyric is you made a rebel of a careless man's careful daughter, production is a little bit of an issue with the multiple vocals going on at the same time, I'm honestly just nitpicking at this point as the rest of the record from here on out is top tier. 9. Speak Now Speak Now is one of those songs with unique perspectives that I adore. About a girl crashing her love interests wedding, the word play is on a whole other level. Saying all that's wrong with this bride, its all so vivid, from a dress shaped like a pastry, to snotty relatives dressed in pastel. The storytelling flows smoothly, minor lyrical changes work wonders, it may seem so small but it can move mountains in the writing. However this song does make the same Dustin Lynch mistake, by rhyming girl with girl, I must hold a standard for myself as amazing as this song is, that is a no for me. But everything else about the song rules for me, 8. Enchanted I know I made an issue of too long songs but this and rest of the long tracks are an exception. The beauty of the songs is expressing the message through not just the lyrics but the vocals, about when she met this person who "enchanted" her (idk else how to describe it) and she never saw him again, and the only way this person can realize this song is about him is the word: wonderstruck which apparently was used in one email she received from him, you get all these emotions of franticness to doubt to hope. One of the best bridges in any of her songs. Enchanted captures all this emotion and the length helps express that. It is an exceptional power ballad, telling what could seem like an insignificant story to something so captivating. 7. Back To December Yes I'm an uncultured swine for not putting this in the top 5. It's her swallowing her pride, rather than giving what I assume to be Taylor Lautner the Joe Jonas treatment she is actually being mature, and this is a prime example of her turning the page from the high school narrative that dominated the last 2 records. And she goes back to December several times, playing it through her mind over and over. How she compares the seasons to her relationship with Lautner, how fall was beautiful and when winter came it turned her cold. I think this doesn't have the right emotion in terms of vocals, this is a pretty small issue for me personally, not really something technical. It's the biggest hit of the record no doubt, and really shows off her maturity from the last record. I love the song regardless of my arguably nonsensical issues. 6. Mean What can I say, the acoustic work is amazing, I was going to put this at #2 or #1 but I knew I should be objective, also might I add, I always here this song in a cracker barrel, I legit have not been to one that didn't eventually played this song. It is one of the only genuine country songs on this record, she could've easily kept this as an album cut as she kept experimenting more and more with pop sounds, I'm glad this was a single, and it was huge. I'm sure we've all dealt with A-Holes and instead of going low like them, its best to take the moral high ground and be patient, because eventually you'll rise higher than them. I love the way she pronounces pathetic, it may seem small but I find it freaking hilarious. It is my favorite track on the record, and while I recognize the quality of the top 5, I'll probably still play this song more than any of them. 5. Long Live Long Live is a dedication to her fans and curiosity of where she will go from here, it was the dawn of new decade, music was changing drastically, and the age of jamming to a song with a fiddle like Zac Brown Band, Brad Paisley was fading. Its her appreciating how she's come so far. When she's done making music she hopes people will remember her fondly, and this song didn't really age well as during the Red Era, was probably when she face the most brutal of criticism, for her being too nice, or fake, and she doesn't deserve any of that. Long Live while not holding up to the dreams envisioned is still a great reminder of looking back to what made you what you are which is very empowering. 4. Innocent If I remember correctly this was written in response to Kanye West ruining what was supposed to be one of the greatest moments of her life. How stardom really can change someone, and as she continues to rise in the music world, she'll try to stay the same, and deep down she's still innocent, now in terms of her, that is not true in the slightest, but in a positive message towards others this is really compelling., and she highlights how flames turn to embers, if you lost your way, its never too late. The buildup to this beautiful ballad is amazing, her vocals are clear, and this ironically is one of the only times she's take the moral high ground when it comes to addressing rumors and insults towards her reputation, because later on she would get ridiculous and bombastic but we'll get there soon ;) 3. Last Kiss I think this is either the last or one of the last songs directed at Joe Jonas, and unlike the last 3 they aren't centered around bitterness, this is just sincere and regretful, its a snow globe of brief happy moments with hints of neglect. She just misses him after all the songs saying how terrible he was or his new girl was. Vocally it is heartbreaking, and yet feels like a mature satisfying ending, not really a happy ending for both of them, but she realizes this is for the best, she was beating a dead horse at this point and its good putting this drama on a shelf. No more, forever and always, no more better than revenge, just moving on which was the right thing to do as she went on to better places. Another case in point of her taking the moral high ground rather than the fun sassiness I love to see. 2. Dear John This track is nearly 7 minutes long, the longest out of any track in her discography , I could fit two songs in here, that's crazy. Now this may or may not be about John Mayer, no one really knows for sure, so I'm not really going to use that as context, its really about dating someone who emotionally neglects you, trying to be with this person. but they always make it worse as she describes he makes sunny skies but shortly makes them rain, and she tries to play his game but he always changes the rules, the wordplay is arguably the peak for this record. How this person is an expert at sorry and keeps the lines blurred, whenever Taylor isn't bitter, she reaches a state of writing so good yet rarely seen. I feel like people might put this one lower because of its outrageous length and might skip it, but for me this song is unskippable, every moment is so captivating, and if you're anything like me seek this song out, it is some of the best she has to offer. 1. Never Grow Up I love Never Grow Up for a lot of reasons, its simplicity, its stripped back production, whenever its just her and a guitar, I know its an instant classic. It brings up the fact most people when they're little take their childhood for granted, we all have a bombastic dream like run for president, or an astronaut, and we can't wait to grow up, but growing up we realize those years was the time to be alive, where at least I had more freedom and now I'm entering the cold brutal world. And the overuse of the word Up may turn you off this track, but I find it secretly brilliant, this is the best vocal track out of the entire record. How money and fame is a lot and everyone wants it, she expresses everything truly important to her will be gone one day, which is her family, they are more important than anything which is a wholesome value everyone should have. So those are my thoughts on Speak Now, how would you rank them, and now we get into bubblegum pop country phase of her career with her 2012 record Red.
2020.09.22 18:05 CyrusWaughFearless (2008) All Songs Ranked
We’ve Now arrived at part 2 of Appreciation Week, and its time to talk about Fearless, which led Taylor Swift to world wide fame, going into this record intellectually, I had pretty big expectations as I do with most sophomore records, and let me just say Fearless is one of the greatest sophomore albums in modern music, most people aren’t going to listen to this record and come out and say “this is one of the greatest sophomore records ever made”, and yes there are flaws with this record, some big glaring ones but we’ll get there, I believe there is no such thing as a perfect album, Mr. Misunderstood my all time favorite has its problems with percussion and some minor writing issues, but a perfect sophomore album is possible, famous ones include and here’s a hot take for you Anything Goes is a perfect sophomore album, another one is Pageant Material by Kacey Musgraves. Here are my requirements for a perfect sequel album: expand your instrumental sound in profound ways, continue the writing in a new compelling manner. Expand on themes created from your first album or introduce new ones, Fearless does all of this to a t, and it feels effortless. But enough of me ranting that’s for later, lets do what I originally aimed to do which is rank each song from this record. 13. The Best Day While I think there are beautiful details in this song, this one just doesn’t really have cohesiveness in details, with lines talking about why trees change in the fall to how he’s scared of nothing at all, this happens a lot, it feels like a puzzle that looks amazing but the pieces don’t really fit together at all. It sounds really pleasant, and her voice is brought out so well, but I feel like if they trimmed and tightened the story it would be better. The final verse of this song is definitely my favorite, where she is feeling down and being bullied and its compelling how little things like window shopping can make you feel better. I think the song had a good theme for it, just needed a little more effort in the writing. 12. Hey Stephen I think the lyrical rhyming of this song is so good, but it just falls a bit flat in instrumentation and production, drums are a little too loud for my taste and I wish the other sounds could come out. It’s a fun little love song and there’s just a whole lot more songs where the writing is more compelling or the melodies are more fun, this one is just on the lower end of this album, I think most people can agree on that, its not like I want to look with problems I just think it’s a clean performance of a simple plan. And its really hard to write about these as it can just be summed up with its too simplistic, I and don’t really enjoy doing that. 11. The Way I Loved You The blending of pop sounds and country sounds on this record blow my mind, revisiting this record I see that this is what I’ve been wanting out of these mainstream bozos, about having this seemingly stable perfect relationship with nothing truly negative in the relationship and she feels like that is dull. She needs these arguments, she may not want to curse his name, but she needs to, I find these perfect relationships in high school definitely questionable, and a little toxicity separates those that last for years to those that last months. And this song brings up why we need it, we don’t necessarily want it, but in order for people to become more fleshed out well rounded individuals this has to occur. 10. Forever & Always I love it when she gets bitter, if I remember correctly this was a last minute addition to the record after she recently broke up with Joe Jonas and how he said he'd love her forever and always, and after all this time he's yet to prove that, you could argue she's kinda hypocritical as she's written songs about couples no longer together but appreciate each other regardless. But then again Jonas immediately did date some other chick after breaking up with her so let her rain her vengeance, hell hath no fury like a woman's scorn. The song is definitely is a blast. I think the opening drum loop is a bit out of place and it doesn't really hold up to today's standards, but still a great write and a welcome addition to the record. 9. You're Not Sorry This is the countrier version of WANEGBT, not as fun but the sound is definitely better. After giving a dude many chances to be sincere with his apologies, so she's given up and shutting him out of her life, I've dealt with people I've given many chances to but the responsible thing to do is cut them loose like a fish dangling off the side of a boat. The buildup is executed very well with little by little each instrument enters. It isn't the most profound lyrically, but the vocal and buildup make up for that. 8. Fearless I think this is carried by the opening detail outlining the significance of the glow from wet pavement, IDK why I love that detail so much. It is supposed to talk about this great first date, but I view it a little differently, as this can really apply to someone you care about enough to show them everything and they appreciate you for what you are. And your willing to let go of your insecurities and open not just to him/her but to the world because with them you are fearless, I haven't really reached that point but this song gives me hope that one day I will. 7. Tell Me Why This song's true meaning has always eluded me but from what I can gather is that she wants to be with this person but he keeps changing and more and more she sees the real version of him and she can only take it so much and eventually cuts him loose, I pick this up in the opening verse and ending line about being hit with bullets and they aren't bulletproof and by the end, this person still kept shooting regardless of that, both want each other but neither can give the other what they want/need, maybe I'm over-ranking this one because its meaning is still questionable for me, but still it is one of the catchiest songs on the album regardless. 6. Change The final song which definitely leans into the rock sound of the 2000's I just found out this was the very first song to break the top 10 for her on the hot 100, this is all about giving hope to help overcome adversity, I've had a bit of the same opening scenario she describes, and even though I'm not the one who stood tall in the end, I keep moving forward because it will happen eventually. It inspires very well and you may not agree, a majority of critics give this song a mixed response from what I've read but I adore this song, probably because the line of hallelujah feels out of place and I agree it does to a degree, but I like it nonetheless, it shows a little bit more honesty in my opinion, its a good write, from walls put around us mentally and our adversity and relentless to give up will knock them down, I like to relate this song to the quote "first they ignore you, they laugh at you, then they fight you and then you win. That is this songs message summed up fairly well, if you're down on your luck with something and need a little faith, give this song a listen . 5. Breathe (ft. Colbie Caillat) The acoustic work here is so well done, the metaphors she compares to this relationship are arguably pretty on the nose, then again I don't see other people comparing a farewell to to bumps in the road you try to avoid. And this relationship is like breathing, its something so natural, and leaving in like holding your breath which hurts, and in a way they are our lungs. It’s pretty obscure in terms of messaging. I definitely think the bridge could've been better for this track as it is the same verse. The vocal delivery definitely pushes it above the others for me, as it does tend to struggle in some other key areas, but still it is great, I've kept this on my relaxation playlist for years now, whenever I get angry or stressed out its songs like this that calm me down. 4. Fifteen I've been one of the biggest critics of high school driven narratives, but this just feels nostalgic, where I come from, High School does not work like this at all, but I do relate to the line where she says this is life before you know who you're gonna be, I do appreciate the vivid details of this like names like Abigail, but I do admire the naivety people feel at this time which is something I feel most can relate to, as life always throws curve balls, it definitely gets the farewells right, given who I want to be, I doubt I will see most of these people I've spent four years with ever again, my ambitions are either greater or lesser than theirs, I wish I could go back and change some things, nudge some things in the right direction rather than the wrong, but still I wouldn't be where I am without them. Fifteen definitely isn't a song I can directly relate to, but its still great nevertheless. 3. You Belong With Me You've been waiting for this, now ironically this song is amazing!!! And unironically its still amazing, look there are some songs with better writing and messages on this record but still I love it so much, while not her biggest hit it is definitely the most recognizable. It has a bit of a hidden advantage as this was literally me junior XD, the music video elevates why I love this song so much, it brings up the corniness of the small town boy and girl and makes it work so well. It is the biggest ear worm of this record, elevating Taylor Swift to a new level of stardom and to this day I think it is still the most watched country music video, I'm so glad it is as there are so many fake country songs like Meant To Be and 10,000 Hours and I would hate if they took the record. Yes, production and instrumentally this isn't the best but it takes me back to a time of innocence and young love which is probably one of the best feelings in the world, and after your first break up you have new perspective, and this song can in some way allow me to relive this feeling. 2. White Horse At least to me this her transition of leaving her high school narrative behind, as while she continued to write many songs about relationships they didn't really rely on that high school narrative. She's done seeing this person in a fairy tale, and after letting him go, he now sees her in a new light but its too late and him on a white horse. My favorite line is where she says to be in love you have to fight to have the upper hand, and honestly she's right, every time I didn't I'd lose somebody. And unlike other songs on this record, she's not looking for revenge or being bitter, she's just sorry and says its too late. It's a really mature message, and possibly the best message of the entire record. But come on! We both know what #1 is: 1. Love Story This is a song I've haven't let go of for years, every thing about this song is beautiful, everything about this song brings a wave of nostalgia, it so well rounded in everything, in the writing, vocals, instrumentation, this retelling of Romeo & Juliet is one of the best I've ever heard, (because I really haven't heard another one) On spotify its one of most streamed country songs and if you cut out all the fake stuff, its the 3rd most popular. The progression of this song is amazing, I love the fiddle in this song and I'd put it up there with some of my all time favorite fiddle tracks like Feathered Indians, Ain't A Train, you'll probably take that as an insult but I don't care. It is one of the best story driven songs of the 2000s and I feel a rush every time, the key change signifies a happy ending to a love story I've only gotten 3 minutes and 55 seconds to know, and to feel emotionally invested in something so short, that is the peak of art imo Next up is the Speak Now era, which I can tell is a fan favorite for this group, what are your personal rankings, what was you're favorite track, your experiences with this album, I 'd love to know.
2020.07.26 23:02 ameliegreenDid Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn break up? I think I have the answer.
I'm an aspiring detective so there's no one more qualified(?) to investigate who Taylor Swift's newest album, Folklore (2020), is about. Taylor Swift has said that the album is not just about herself, but also stories she came up with during quarantine. Unlike with her Lover (2019) album where it was safe to assume basically every lyric was about her boyfriend of nearly four years, this makes it hard to differentiate between fact and fiction. Taylor herself has clarified that only three songs are about a fictitious Teenage Love Triangle, but I've seen some hot takes that either the entire album is somehow about these characters, or that it's all about her breaking up with Joe Alwyn. I want to clear one thing up: there are several songs about Joe Alwyn and none of them are break-up songs.. I can (almost) prove it. 1. Invisible String:
Green was the color of the grass where I used to read at Centennial Park.
Centennial Park is in Nashville where Taylor Swift moved as a teen to pursue music. In an interview from January 2020 with Red Magazine, Joe Alwyn mentions having worked for a yogurt shop prior to acting.
Isn't it just so pretty to think all along there was some invisible string tying you to me?
The red thread/string of fate is an East Asian belief that you're connected to your soulmate by an invisible red cord tied around your finger.
Bad was the blood of the song in the cab on your first trip to LA.
"Bad Blood" is the name of a popular Taylor Swift song released on her 1989 album from 2014.
Bold was the waitress on our three-year trip getting lunch down by the Lakes. She said I looked like an American singer.
Most fans interpret Taylor Swift's lyric change in her cover of "September" to mean their anniversary is September 28th 2016, so their third anniversary would have been this past year. In September of last year, Joe alwyn and Taylor Swift were photographed boarding her private jet. Joe Alwyn was photographed by paparazzi from JustJared in Soho a few days later on September 25th 2019 (3 days before their anniversary). "The Lakes" is a colloquial term for the lake district in northwest England, an hour from Soho. Taylor Swift was absent from social media and public appearances from September 21st to October 3rd. I can't confirm they went on a trip to the mountains in England to celebrate their third anniversary, but what I can say is that there is significant circumstantial evidence they went on a trip to the mountains in England to celebrate their third anniversary.
A string that pulled me out of all the wrong arms right into that dive bar.
Taylor Swift had multiple high-profile relationships in 2016 before dating Joe Alwyn. She references a meeting in a dive bar, which is interesting because in her song "Delicate" she references meeting a blue-eyed lover in a "dive bar on the east side". Her song "So It Goes.." from the same album also references that she "met you in a bar".
One single thread of gold tied me to you.
Taylor swift often uses the color "gold" in reference to her relationship. She was in a "gold cage, hostage to my feelings" in "So It Goes", she was "deep blue, but you painted me golden" in "Dancing With Our Hands Tied", love is "Golden, like daylight" in "Daylight", and a lover made a "mark on me, a golden tattoo" in dress (maybe a reference to a golden henna tattoo she was sporting on September 28th 2016, their presumed anniversary date).
Cold was the steel of my axe to grind for the boys who broke my heart, now I send their babies presents.
Taylor Swift wrote the better half of an entire album as an open letter to her ex-boyfriend Joe Jonas, and publicly called him out on the Ellen show for breaking up with her over a 28-second phone conversation. Joe Jonas is now married and has a baby on the way with his wife Sophie Turner. Taylor Swift and Sophie Turner were friendly with each other when they appeared on the Graham Norton Show in 2019.
Hell was the journey but it brought me heaven.
In Taylor Swift's "False God", another song presumably about Joe Alwyn, she sings "I know heaven's a thing, I go there when you touch me." This would not be the first time she's likened him to heaven. I find it hard to argue this song isn't about her relationship with Joe. The timeline works too well. 2.Peace:
All these people think love's for show, but I would die for you in secret.
I have two things to say here. 1. It's a common fan theory that Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn are in a fake relationship, either for publicity or to conceal Taylor Swift's (and possibly Joe Alwyn's) sexuality. This has been brought up enough that it wouldn't surprise me to find out she knows about it. 2. Throughout her career Taylor Swift has become known for her high-profile relationships, her last two (Calvin Harris and Tom Hiddleston) being the subject of multiple Instagram posts on her and her close circles accounts. Her courtship with Joe Alwyn has been uncharacteristically private by comparison, with fans often questioning the status of their relationship due to their general refusal to answer questions about each other in interviews, having never posted a picture together on social media, and never walking the red carpet at the same time even when both are in attendance of events. Their relationship didn't even become public until May 2017, eight months after they're believed to have started dating.
But I'm a fire and I'll keep your brittle heart warm.
This line is eerily similar to "he built a fire just to keep me warm" from "Call It What You Want".
And you know that I'd swing with you for the fences, sit with you in the trenches.
It might be worth noting that in mid-2016, when Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn are believed to have met, he was promoting a film where he played a war veteran.
Family that I chose now that I see your brother as my brother. Is it enough?
Joe Alwyn has a younger brother. One can assume from his previous public statements defending her this means they get along. This is not my strongest argument, but I have interpreted it to be her asking if Joe will be okay spending his life with someone who's life can be so tumultuous. 3. Exile (feat. Bon Iver): Male narrative, Exile (2020)
It took you five whole minutes to pack us up and leave me with it.
Female narrative, Exile (2020)
I think I've seen this film before, so I'm leaving out the side door.
Cornelia Street, Lover (2019)
Back when we were card sharks, playing games. I thought you were leading me on. I packed my bags, left Cornelia Street before you even knew I was gone.
Male narrative, Exile (2020)
You were my town, now I'm in exile seeing you out. / You're not my homeland anymore, so what am I defending now?
False God, Lover (2019)
Staring out the window like I'm not your favorite town. I'm New York city, I still do it for you, babe.
Female narrative, Exile (2020)
All this time we walked a very thin line. / You didn't even see the signs.
Dancing With Our Hands Tied, Reputation (2017)
You said there was nothing in the world that could stop it. I had a bad feeling. I knew there was no one in the world who could take it.
I opted to just compare lyrics from Taylor Swift's Lover (2019) album to support my argument that this song is the break-up alluded to in Cornelia Street told from Joe Alwyn's perspective, with Taylor Swift's own point of view in the female narrative. This song is co-written by William Bowery, believed to be a pseudonym for the following reasons: At the time of writing this, no one has found evidence a William Bowery even exists. One of Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn's earliest public sightings was at the Bowery hotel. When they were believed to have met, he was promoting a film where he played a character named William. His grandfather is also named William. Joe Alwyn has an English literature degree, and fans have claimed he writes poetry.. I can't find any news article that support this, but if it's true it wouldn't be a stretch to say he can write song lyrics. I've been seeing a lot of theories that they've broken up and it's got me worried about Joe's housing situation (this is a joke lol), so this is me trying to comfort myself about it. I like to think they're still together and most of the break-up tracks on this album are about Big Machine or the Love Triangle, but I haven't come up with a good enough argument for that which hasn't already been made. There were 5 holes in the fence. Thanks for listening.
2020.07.23 19:12 arxeroComplete SG1 Rewatch and some thoughts (29 yr old me vs. 13 yr old me)
I recently completed a full rewatch of SG1. All episodes, no skipping around. (Continuum & Ark as well) and I had a bunch of thoughts, might as well blab them to whomever might listen I guess. Overall thoughts: Goddamn I love this series. It's cheery, action-packed, thought provoking, funny, dramatic when it needs to be, it's just great. Great characters. Every members of SG1 is fantastic (Including Jonas/Vala/Cam [Cam being the weakest, imo]). Hammond of Texas for life. --------------------------------------------------------- Favorite SG-1 Episodes: - Space Race - My god was this a breath of fresh air. I could spend 10 episodes with this storyline alone. So cool. And featuring Carter being a badass as always. And the sponsor commercials were hilarious. 13 year old me watched this while I was playing Extreme-G and XGRA and it was so similar I loved it. - Urgo - Because, duh. tRyYY tHhE PAdDleS!! - Wormhole X-Treme (100) & "200" - Because, again, duh. - Heroes Part 1 & Part 2 - As a 13 year old kid, I had no thoughts beyond "wow this documentary maker guy as an asshole, fuck that guy!" But now.....oof......this episode is as real as it gets. One of the most dramatic of the entire series imo. The speeches and monologues about transparency within government and what the people deserve to know.....wow do those resonate right now. No one will ever be able to replace Dr. Fraser, she was a fantastic and heartwarming character. Why did she leave the show? - Affinity - Teal'c beating the crap out of some fuccboi angry tailgating drivers on the streets with "Who's The Man!?" blaring in the background stands out as one of the most badass scenes in the entire series, imo. (Along with Tealc PI, of course) - The Lost City - Still so damn cool after all this time. O'Neill getting straight to business, heartwarming moments, and the first time we get an all-out Earth vs. Goauld battle. I could eat up the 302's / Prometheus battling Alkesh and Gliders alllllll day long. - Citizen Joe - Easily the best of the "clipshow" episodes. Hilarious. - s10e14 (Don't know the title) - This episode definitively proves, without a doubt, how integral RDA was to this series. He comes back on screen and it feels like you get a piece of your heart back. He absolutely made this series what it was in S1-8 and is sorely missed. 13-Year old me also shamelessly watched scenes of Sha're getting undressed on repeat. Oops. The shame. --------------------------------------------------------- - Best Bad Guy: As a kid: Hathor, she scared the shit out of me, dunno why. As an adult: Ba'al for sure. Charismatic, cunning, and evil. I just wish he had that iconic katana-blade (Continuum) during the main series. he straight up shaves Apophis' brainbox clean off. So badass. Replicarter takes third. I could've watched a whole two seasons of Earth dealing with her. Carter made a great bad-guy. - Worst Bad Guy: Adria. Dear god. So bland / Lucian Alliance - Aldi-Brand Goauld - Most Hated Bad Guy: Sen. Kinsey (Duh) or the guy who plays Q - Best Good Guy: Tealc - always knows what's right and wrong. Always gets shit done. Undomesticated equines. - Worst Good Guy:Any Tokra except Jacob / Martouf. Pricks, arrogant, always had hidden motives. Always some hidden BS that ended up getting the Tauri into trouble. / Rodney McKay dear god what a fucking prick this guy is in SG1. Not to mention he straight up grabs a fistful of civilian-Carter's ass during the time travel episode. So fucking creepy to see in this day & age. How they redeem this character in Atlantis is beyond me. He's disgusting, arrogant as fuck, annoying, and never lets anyone finish a sentence. Nothing about him was likable on screen. Give me Jonas Quinn over this guy any day of the week. - Nicest Good Guy: Saul from Saul's diner. - Funniest Character: Jack O'Neill bar none. / Vala is a close second / Urgo / Nerus (Fatman Goauld) --------------------------------------------------------- Seasons 9 & 10.......... Oh man, where do I begin. 9/10 are good, don't get me wrong, but man are they different. I read a post here the other day mentioning that 9/10 were supposed to be an entirely different series titled "Stargate Command" and it really makes sense. - S1-8 is a fun ride of mostly self-contained episodes with a loose overall arc and that's what made it great. S9-10 follows the modern-day conventions of one/two overall arcs that we deal with every episode. Ori / Free Jaffa / Lucian Alliance and that's it. It gets fatiguing pretty fast when every episode is "HALLOWED ARE THE ORI HALLOWED ARE THE ORI" some sniveling Alliance dude, or the Free Jaffa being distrustful of the Tauri. - The Tokra (arrogant as they were) are mostly gone, only mentioned in passing. - The Asgard (save for the last few episodes) are nonexistant, only mentioned in passing. - The Free Jaffa absolutely suck. Every episode with them is "haha KREE, my dude, yeah I know the Tauri were instrumental in freeing us from literal slavery and slaughtering our oppressors but I just.....don't.....TRUST THEM, THEY ARE THE ENEMY (FOR SOME REASON!) YEAH MAN KREE, I TOTALLY AGREE FUCK THE TAURI" Constant bickering, mind control this.....influence that.....politics... Not to mention the Jaffa we see on-screen during S8-onwards are markedly less threatening looking than earlier seasons. It's like they told all the intimidating buff-as-fuck Jaffa to go home. Self-contained "explore this new planet" episodes are few and far between. - Vala, however, is a fantastic addition to the show. Breath of fresh air character that doesn't occupy a spot already held by a previous SG team member. I love this character. - Mitchell is.....not Col. O'Neill. He just doesn't fill the shoes, or any shoes tbh. His character is......just ok. And his "that's what I'm talkin' 'bout" line and constant references to his grandma are extremely cringey" - Landry is......not General Hammond. Far from it. His character goes from an absolute hardass with no humor and then makes a sudden switch to humor and caring from S9 to S10. - New Doctor(s) are.......not Janet, that's for sure. Makes you miss her kinda...warm? presence. She was great. There's also a bunch of passing references to Atlantis / Atlantis tech / Pegasus Ships / characters that will definitely pass right over the heads of anyone watching SG1 for the first time unless they watch Atlantis alongside. The Ori are a great enemy that get dealt with entirely too quickly. (Due to the show being canceled, I get it.) They're easily a 4-season enemy. But once Earth develops the Anti-Prior device it's basically all over. They go from "oh shit these dudes basically ARE gods" to "nah here's a little disc that negates all that". And once we get to the "ok you have all the Asgard tech now"-episode, all Earth's ships are OP-as-fuck. The Ori Ships / followers / overall design are fantastic. The 3D rendered gate for the S9-10 intro sequence is verryyyyyy dated looking. Eek. All in all, Seasons 9 & 10 make me wish we got 5 more seasons of season 1-8 SG1 with 9/10's budget (plus Vala). My god that would've been amazing. --------------------------------------------------------------- Continuum - A nice fun little side-story with some absolutely amazing visuals and music. The shots of Ba'al's fleet bombing the entire planet while SG1 flys across the continent in F22's are so. damn. cool. I'll gush about the cinematography again, just because. The visuals hit different in this movie. They're so good looking. Especially scenes like this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCCkKfTVEy4 The Ark of Truth - Wrapped the Ori story as well as you could hope with a single movie, I guess. Adria still sucks and isn't any more threatening than she was during Season 9/10, despite her claiming she now has all the combined powers of the Ori. The final fight between Morgan / Adria is laughable. **EDIT*** - How could I forget! The Audio! I'm an Audio Engineer after all. Damn I feel dumb for forgetting. SG1 has absolutely FANTASTIC sound design. Props to all involved. As iconic as Star Trek and Star Wars (Unlike Star Wars though, sound design is consistent, even down to individual weapons-fire). Almost every sound is satisfying. And of course, the score is fantastic as well. Best Sound Design: Zat Gun / Anti-Replicator-Gun / Ha'tak Planetary Bombardment - The latter of which is absolutely terrifying, especially during the destruction of Tollana and during Continuum's attack on Earth. The Zats do look kinda like a weird phallus, but my god what I wouldn't give to have on in real life. I think they're cooler than the staff weapons, imo. Overall, of course. I love this series and now it's onto Atlantis! I'm already a few episodes in and to be honest.....I miss SG1. SG1 is the best of them all, imo. I miss Carter, I miss Daniel, I miss O'Neill (the most), I miss Vala, I miss Tealc, I miss Hammond of Texas (may he rest in peace). Cheers yall!
2020.06.30 05:35 FailureToExecute[Long post warning] What if the Hurricanes didn't draft Boychuk?
aka I'm going crazy without hockey and need to do something Background: Franchise Hockey Manager 6 is an officially-licensed simulator that allows you to step into the shoes of a general manager. If you've played any other sports management simulator, you know what to expect; if you haven't, think Be A GM mode from the EA games on steroids and without any of the fancy graphics (the opposite, in fact, with the game being little more than a confusing spiderweb of menus). With the Steam Summer Sale going on, it's currently $10, so I decided to give it a whirl I kinda hate it because it crashes a lot but it's fun enough when it works despite its UI In 2008, the Carolina Hurricanes committed one of the biggest draft blunders in franchise history: with the 14th overall pick, they selected Zach Boychuk. Boychuk would play 127 games for the Hurricanes, recording a grand total of 12 goals and 18 assists. That's fine, you might be thinking, drafting outside the top 10 is a crapshoot at the best of times and not everyone who goes in the first round will end up being an NHLer. With the very next pick, 15th overall, the Ottawa Senators drafted an undersized Swedish defenseman by the name of Erik Karlsson. Obviously, hindsight is 20/20, and there was good reason for teams to be down on Karlsson. Scouting reports at the time expressed concern over his smaller stature, lack of physical ability, and were worried that he wouldn't be able to build the muscle necessary to transfer his game to the NHL. If his game was even transferable at all. But what if those two picks were reversed? What would happen? Note that for this simulation, I have FHM's custom player development turned on, so the in-game versions of players may have substantially different careers than their real life counterparts (Phil The Thrill won the Richard 3 times and Eichel won the Hart 5 years in a row, for example) 2008-09 It's a disappointing year for both teams as they both miss the playoffs, Carolina in 9th (seven points out) and Ottawa one point behind them. Boychuk records 3G and 4A in 26 games with Ottawa. Karlsson does not make his NHL debut. Attempting to add a veteran presence, Carolina claims Keith Aucoin and Frank Kaberle on waivers. Eric Staal falls off a cliff this year, only registering 19G 24A in 76 games – nearly a 50% drop from the previous season. The Hurricanes fire Laviolette during the offseason and hire Bruce Boudreau as his replacement.
Staal signs a two year extension at 5.07mil per.
Carolina selects Oliver Ekman-Larsson with the #14 pick
Brandon Pirri and Alex Chiasson are also selected
2009-10 It's another rough year for the Carolina Hurricanes. The team finishes with a 38-37-7 record, good for 12th in the Eastern conference. Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Erik Karlsson both make their NHL debuts; Karlsson puts on a dominant rookie season with 17G 37A in 74 games playing top minutes with Joni Pitkanen. OEL records 8 points in 45 games. Staal nicely bounces back, notching 35G 36A. Only a couple of months into the season, word gets out that Carolina has already soured on Boudreau as coach. On December 21st, he's fired and Don Waddell takes over as head coach. Zach Boychuk continues to languish, getting to play 29 games but only recording 5 points. Ottawa qualifies for the playoffs but is eliminated in six by Washington.
With the first overall selection, Phoenix selects Czech goaltender Petr Mrazek
Carolina selects Justin Faulk with the #9 pick, passing on Kuznetsov (#10 DAL), Tarasenko (#14 FLA), and Panarin (#17 TBL).
2010-11 Much like their real life counterparts, the digital version of the Hurricanes just can't get anything going. They finish 10th in the East with a 36-36-10 record. Karlsson proves himself to be a remarkably consistent producer, once again racking up 54 points (15G 39A) in a full 82 games. OEL takes a significant step forward, playing 57 games and scoring 5G 20A while playing on the second pair with Seidenberg. Eric Staal's season is plagued with injuries, only playing in 45 games (14G 27A). The team's leading scorers are Ray Whitney (56pts), Justin Williams (54pts), and Erik Karlsson (54pts). Up in Ottawa, Boychuk plays 33 games (2G 4A). They manage to make the playoffs as the eighth seed, and are knocked out in six games by Pittsburgh. Boychuk plays in 5 of these games, recording 2G 2A.
Eric Staal signs a 4y5.56mil extension.
Philadelphia offer sheets Anton Babchuk with a 2yleague min. contract, and Carolina does not match.
Carolina selects Victor Rask with the #12 pick, passing on Huberdeau (#13, CGY), Landeskog (#25, OTT) and Couturier (#26, MTL)
Joe Corvo, Ray Whitney, and Rod Brind'Amour retire.
2011-12 Carolina still languishes near the bottom of the Southeastern division, finishing with a 31-37-14 record. Staal immediately proves that his extension was worth every penny, posting 39G 32A. Karlsson and Ekman-Larsson are put together on the top pairing and have great chemistry, posting 59 (16G 43A) and 48 (12G 36A) points respectively. The team's leading scorers are Staal, Karlsson, and Williams (48pts). If the team had more forward depth, they could be a real powerhouse, but it just can't come together. Desperate for a change, the team fires Don Waddell and also brings in Eddie Olczyk as new head coach. Boychuk plays 34 games for Ottawa, scoring four goals and seven assists. They tie for 8th place with Philadelphia (both 38-35-9) and edge out the last spot due to having a positive goal differential. Once again, they are matched up against Pittsburgh in the first round, this time exacting revenge in a grueling seven-game series. Unfortunately, they're swept by Boston in the second round. Boychuk plays in one playoff game and scores one goal.
Oliver Ekman-Larsson is signed to a three year extension with an AAV of 1.94mil.
Erik Karlsson is given a 5y4.16mil extension.
Carolina selects Olli Maatta at 8th and goaltender Jon Gillies at 13th. I couldn't find out how they got two first round picks this year; nothing showed up in any trade and the Babchuk offer sheet was too low.
Teuvo Teravainen is drafted at 9th by Toronto
Carolina drafts Brock McGinn in the third round, #68 overall
2012-13 Things finally start looking up for the Hurricanes. This season, they finish second in the division with a 42-33-7 records, qualifying for the playoffs for the first time since 2006. Erik Karlsson's takes a step back this year, falling to 47 points (14G 33A), but the slack is taken up by OEL who posts 56 (18G 38A). Joni Pitkanen also has a banner year, recording 45 points (12G 33A) – almost tying a career high and being better than his last two seasons combined. Brandon Pirri has a breakout year and scores 19 goals, good for second on the team. Eric Staal continues to be a driving force for the team as he scores 32 goals and notches 42 helpers. Olli Maatta makes his NHL debut after an injury to OEL. He records one assist in 9 games. Raleigh's first taste of playoff hockey in seven years comes to an end as the Penguins knock them out in six. Ekman-Larsson records 3G and 3A in the series, Staal 2G 3A, and Faulk emerges as an unlikely hero with 1G 3A – definitely a surprise considering he'd only managed 39 points in 135 regular season games to date. Karlsson is a bit of a disappointment, only managing 1G 2A. Regardless, optimism abounds in the locker room and the team's chemistry has never been higher. Boychuk spends the entire season in the AHL.
With the #19 pick, Carolina selects goaltender Eric Comrie. They also select Artturi Lehkonen with the 49th overall pick.
Matt Cullen retires.
2013-14 Carolina's success is short-lived, however. After the emotional high of making the playoffs, they follow up with an abysmal 28-46-8 record, only 8 points better than the last place Florida Panthers. Even adding Raffi Torres as a free agent wasn't enough to turn things around, and head coach Olczyk was fired in the middle of March. Veteran Derian Hatcher was signed as his replacement. It's tough to pinpoint where things went wrong. Staal's season was once again marred by injury, only able to play in 66 games (18G 23A). The dynamic Swedish duo was again charged with carrying the bulk of the team's offense. Ekman-Larsson was the team's leading scorer at 53 points with 16G 37A, while Karlsson was unable to find a way out of his slump (12G 29A). The team only had one 20-goal-scorer, Alex Chiasson, while newcomer Nathan Gerbe notched the third-highest number of assists on the team with 28. Things are very grim indeed as we look ahead to the upcoming draft. Boychuk spends another full year in the AHL.
Carolina takes Sam Reinhart at #2.
Oskar Lindblom and Nicolas Aube-Kubel are also selected by the Hurricanes
Alex Nedeljkovic is drafted 27th overall by the Islanders
2014-15 Zach Boychuk's time in Ottawa comes to a close as he signs a 2-year contract with Dallas at league minimum. Sam Reinhart is a revelation for the ever-unpredictable Hurricanes, and they bounce back in a big way: 49-30-3, good for third in the Metro. In his rookie season, Reinhart records 81 points (32G 49A) and secures the team's first Calder trophy. Ekman-Larsson has an incredible season as he breaks both the 20 goal and 50 assist mark (51 to be precise) on his way to a career-best 71 points. Eric Staal manages to pull out of his nosedive and while he fails to hit 20 goals, he still registers 41 assists on his way to 60 points. Brandon Pirri finally manages to build off his breakout from two seasons ago, finishing with 59 points (25G 34A). Karlsson notches a respectable 50 points (12G 38A). Unfortunately, they can't continue that success in the postseason, as the second-seeded Islanders clean them up in five games. Boychuk spends the entire season with the Texas Stars of the AHL.
Eric Staal signs a six year extension with an AAV of 5.54mil.
Ekman-Larsson inks a two year deal worth 4.97mil per.
Joni Pitkanen also signs a two year extension, valued at 4mil per.
Carolina selects Jacob Larsson at #19, passing on Mikko Rantanen (#21, NYI) and Sebastian Aho (#24, CHI)
Jack Roslovic also drafted in the second round
Justin Williams retires.
2015-16 Carolina made some big splashes in the offseason, acquiring Gustav Nyquist, Marian Hossa, and Casey Cizikas. As you may have come to expect by now, they did not pay off. The team finishes with a 38-39-5 record and misses the playoffs. It all started when Eric Staal suffered a season-ending concussion in a November game against Ottawa; even though he was relegated to a bottom six winger at this stage of his career, the team's morale vanished and never recovered. December saw the team claim Antoine Roussel off waivers in an attempt to fill the void. In January, the team fired Coach Hatcher and brought in none other than Ronny Franchise to replace him, which did turn the team's fortunes around somewhat, but it wasn't enough to carry them across the finish line. Reinhart fell victim to the sophomore slump, only putting up 26G and 35A for a team-leading 61 points. Newcomer Nyquist recorded 23 goals and 32 assists for 55 points, just edging out alternate captain Erik Karlsson (17G 37A). OEL's production came crashing back down to earth, and is if that weren't bad enough, he also missed 18 games due to injury, thereby failing to reach 40 points (15G 23A) for the first time since his sophomore year. Boychuk spends another season in the AHL. At this point, he has not played an NHL game in four years.
Carolina drafts Patrik Laine at #3
Buffalo sends Jonas Brodin and Niklas Hagman to Chicago, receiving Niklas Hjalmarsson and Sebastian Aho in return. At this point, I strongly considered ending the experiment early.
2016-17 Just as roller coasters go down, they also go up. Carolina finishes second in the division with a 46-26-10 record. Eric Staal makes his triumphant return, notching 47 points (17G 30A) in 75 games. Reinhart recovers from his slump and once again plays at effectively a point per game (34G 47A). Similarly recovering is OEL, who puts up 16G 39A for a nice bounceback. Pirri surprises everyone with a monstrous season, but in the final weeks he suffers a shattered tailbone that renders him unavailable for the playoffs – a tough break, literally, as the team will sorely miss his 74 points (23G 51A). Karlsson is a puck-moving machine, putting up 54 assists from the blue line (66pts). Nyquist continues to be a core offensive player, cracking both 30 goals and 30 assists on his way to matching EK65's point total. While Laine does make his NHL debut, he doesn't stick around long, playing only six games (1G). Fans are once again let down by a first round exit, this time stretching the series against Pittsburgh to seven before ultimately being eliminated on home ice. Reinhart records 9 points in the series (2G 7A), OEL notches 6 (2G 4A), Nyquist hammers five goals home, and Karlsson puts up four assists. Bottom six center Nikita Soshnikov has a surprising breakout eerily reminiscent of Foegele against the Caps, putting up 4G 2A despite still being in the single digits for both categories after 125 regular season games. Francis' brief tenure as head coach comes to a close. Barry Trotz is his replacement. 27-year-old Boychuk moves on to his third franchise, this time Edmonton, as it becomes more and more evident that he'll play out his career an AHL journeyman. A compliance buyout is awarded to every team as a result of CBA negotiations. In a move that angers many fans, long-time captain Eric Staal is bought out. He ends his 13-year tenure with the Hurricanes having played 912 games, scoring 319 goals and 416 assists (735pts)
Rod Brind'Amour is inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Erik Karlsson signs a four year, 7.9mil extension. He is named captain.
The Hurricanes do not have a first round selection
Las Vegas signs Eric Staal to a one year, 4.05mil deal
2017-18 Karlsson's first season as captain is fraught with difficulty. The Metropolitan division has emerged as the most challenging division in the league, with the top 4 teams all securing a minimum of 100 points. The Hurricanes are not one of them as they coast their way to a 40-36-6 record, finishing 7th in the division. That's not to say that Karlsson didn't try; in fact, he records a career high 77 points (24G 53A) and leads the team in scoring. Reinhart records 34G 37A and is the only other player on the team to break 70 points. Pirri (18G 44A) and Nyquist (28G 33A) continue to be offensive stalwarts for the club, while Karlsson's long time partner Ekman-Larsson puts up 60 points (16G 44A). Olli Maatta has a breakout year and nearly hits 50 points while playing on the second pair with Faulk (who also records a career-best 19G 25A). This season will be remembered by Hurricanes fans for the number of defensemen the team claimed off of waivers, 5 to be exact. The team also shipped Marian Hossa and Evgeni Medvedev off to Washington in exchange for Austin Watson. Locker room morale is at an all-time low, although the players are still content. The highs seen years ago appear to be lost forever. Boychuk's contract with Edmonton expires. He has not played an NHL game in six years.
Eric Staal retires at 33.
2018-19 Despite morale being at its lowest, the team rallies and puts together a 45-27-10 record, finishing fourth in the insanely competitive Metropolitan. Reinhart puts together his most impressive season to date, breaking 50 goals (54) and recording 48 assists as he cruises to a 102-point season, winning the Rocket Richard. Pirri is within spitting distance of a point per game, putting together 34G and 43A. Karlsson hits a new career high for assists with 56, but his point total drops as he only pots 16. Nevertheless, he's rewarded with the Hart trophy for his efforts. Nyquist also hits 70 points (25G 45A). OEL has a down year, playing in 80 games but only recording 41 points, 31 of which were assists. Patrik Laine finally starts putting things together, recording 15G and 32A. Disaster strikes in the very first game against Washington. Erik Karlsson suffers a severe neck laceration in overtime, draining all the fight from the team in one fell swoop. Prompt medical attention saves his life and it's later announced that they expect him to recover in 2-3 months. Carolina manages a decisive 5-1 win in the first game on home ice, but ultimately fall in five, unable to truly recover from the grievous injury to their captain. Boychuk goes the entire year without signing a new contract. His hockey career appears to be over. This post is getting long, so I'll end it on a cliffhanger. Hopefully you guys enjoyed reading this; if you did, I'll get part 2 up later this week.
2020.06.26 10:29 aqua_zesty_man[Blade Runner] When Roy Batty says, "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate," he is talking about aliens.
The premise here is he's having traveled beyond where humans have ever been up to that time, possibly on a Tyrell ship, or maybe as a prisoner of an alien species who then escaped or was let free to return to Earth. This is somewhat of an update to a fan-theory I have previously posted: https://www.reddit.com/FanTheories/comments/5pbs09/what_fan_theories_made_bad_or_mediocre_movies/dcqu9lg/, but now includes the Blade Runner movies via the above quote and because of other factors which we will outline shortly. In a nutshell, I posit a Shared 'Grunge Tech' universe in which all of these franchise films or video games are part: Blade Runner 1 & 2; Alien 1 through 4, Prometheus, Alien: Covenant, and associated video games; Predator 1 through 4 and associated video games; AVP 1 & 2 and associated video games; RoboCop 1 through 3 (but not the 2014 remake); and the movies Total Recall (1990), Outland (1981), and Leviathan (1989). By Grunge Tech, I mean the aesthetic that makes it appear that Apple, Inc dominated the field of computing aesthetics and ergonomics and then got complacent and sloppy, turning everything into a dull, dreary monochrome color scheme, including maintaining 1970s-style computer readouts for the next couple hundred years. Blade Runner was set in 2019, with a real-world release date of 1982. In that reality, there's flying cars, programmable people, and interplanetary travel. But it seems rather incredible humans gained not only easy interplanetary travel but picked up FTL early enough to be able to have wars being fought for or against an interstellar empire in just thirty-seven years. When Roy Batty says "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe," he's not just addressing Deckard or Gaff, but all humans. I think he has had contact with aliens who own those attack ships or know who does. He's been beyond the human sphere. This makes more sense if we look at the easter egg mentioned in the article "25 Movie Details That Even Die Hard Fans Confessed To Miss" (www.thepopple.com/famous-movie-details-you-probably-missed-69119): "A lot of you might have noticed that computer interface used in *Alien (1979), the same interface is used in Blade Runner (1982). Because of this many fans believe that both the stories take place in the same universe. // When director Ridley Scott created Alien Covenant in 2017, he kept the trend alive."* Then there's videos like this one (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hqaqQ4Mb38) which detail various similarities in Ridley Scott's filmmaking with the Blade Runner and Alien franchises. If they belong in the same universe, that's well and good, but Xenomorphs don't have a spacefaring civilization. They more or less get spread the universe by other species to be studied (humans), used as weapons (humans), or used as prey (Predators). Which brings us to the Aliens vs. Predator spinoffs. If the Aliens movies are part of this universe, then so are the AVP movies and the video games that assume the shared universe, the Aliens: Colonial Marines video game, and the four Predator movies. Those movies allow for lots of things that need to be accounted for:
Weyland-Yutani's interest in the Xenomorphs (Alien 1 and AVP 1): In AVP 1, existence of the Xenomorphs was revealed to Weyland and his company, and he wanted everything he could get his hands on concerning the Xenomorphs. This agenda was maintained for the entirety of Weyland Industries' existence, then Weyland-Yutani's. Originally it is implied that when the Nostromo computer uploaded its sensor readings to the network and back to corporate, they thought so much of those sensor readings that they immediately wrote off the human crewmembers as expendable and fed secret orders to Ash who then went haywire. It seems incredibly callous and cold-hearted of them unless you allow for them having had prior knowledge of the Xenomorphs and the Engineers. If Weyland-Yutani threw their freighter crews under the proverbial bus every time they ran across a strange signal of intelligent origin, they'd never get anything done. But if the signal's origin was recognized as Engineer (certainly an older and more advanced race), then sacrificing a crew and delaying a huge shipment of ore to get some Engineer artifacts makes sense, from a strictly cost-benefit perspective anyway.
The existence of Predators as a race, their technology and the CIA's pursuit of it, and their having visited Earth since at least the 18th century in this shared universe can serve as a reasonable explanation of how humans can have strange crime scene-scanning devices in the second Predator movie. In the first movie, which in-universe takes place in 1987, a pocket nuke (essentially fusion-powered satchel charge) might have blown the Predator hunter to bits, but Dutch Schaefer survived the blast despite being barely a stone's throw from the blast. Ten years later (according to the second film), when Detective Harrigan briefly catches up to the 'City Hunter' and is detained by Agent Keyes, Keyes tells him about the events of the first movie including the potential recovery of alien artifacts: specifically the plasma caster, face mask, and any other hardware the Predator discarded prior to his final deathmatch with Schaefer. These objects wouldn't have been consumed in the hunter's suicide unless by sheer luck the battle had ended in the same spot of the jungle where it began. So we can already assume the CIA recovered those devices and have been on the search for more Predators and their technology ever since. Then, in the second movie, more Predator artifacts are acquired: the urban hunter's damaged plasma caster, mask, medical kit, collapsing spear, frogleg darts, and the wrist computer that Harrigan disabled with the flying disc weapon.
Going by Oleg Taktarov's character's statement that he was fighting in Chechnya before being abducted, we can pinpoint the third Predator movie anywhere from 1994 to 1996 (making it a prequel to the second movie), or between 1999 and 2009, meaning that the Predators are still coming to Earth after Harrigan's encounter with them in 1997.
If we also bring in the Predators through the first and second AVP movies, we have the entire Predator civilization as interested parties in the Xenomorphs and it makes sense that Predators want to keep Earth 'clean' of Xeno infestation so that future warriors can come to Earth for hunting without having to fight only Xenomorphs all the time. The Predators love Earth and all of its variety. They come here a lot. They like the challenge of hunting humans as smart prey. Xenos are smart, but they're not organized as a civilization the way humans are. They simply consume the local inhabitants, build nests, and build up their numbers to insane amounts. But Predators like to come to earth while trying to minimize their exposure to non-prey humans in an urban or rural setting. That's all part of the challenge.
If these Predator artifacts led to even greater breakthroughs, it's possible that by 2019 we get Blade Runner's flying cars and off-world colonies where Replicants are required to live and work.
Putting Predators into the shared universe gives us at least one possibility for who or what Roy Batty ran into 'out there' off the shoulder of Orion, which could mean either the Betelgeuse or Bellatrix star systems. If we wanted to pin this down further using science developed after the fact, Betelgeuse is 700 LY away and is approaching or has already entered into its supernova stage, while Bellatrix is only 200 LY away and a nearer destination. (However, from a writer's perspective, it's more dramatic for Roy Batty to have traveled to Betelgeuse where one or more civilizations are fighting over everything not nailed down before Betelgeuse finally explodes and wipes everything out.)
Now Replicants are programmed meta-humans, basically an engineered subspecies of human as a permanent underclass held in perpetual corporate bondage. Human programming seems like an even stranger development to have occurred in as few as three decades. But if you'll allow the indulgence, if we add the RoboCop movies and Total Recall to the shared universe:
We can have deep-brain manipulation much earlier than this world's version of 2019.
We have some pretty great cybernetics which leads into technology for making both Replicants and Synthetics.
We can infer that the big corporations, from OCP and Tyrell to Weyland-Yutani and United Systems Military have been working toward creating the perfect workforce. In the RoboCop movies they started out with technology that allowed for legally dead people to be programmed and 'owned' via the proprietary technology that kept them alive but subservient to company interests.
After RoboCop 2 and the chaos that Cain created, the cyborg path was presumably cut short by legal-political fallout, so the mega-corporations developed the Replicants. These were organics engineered with a short lifespan built in as a fail-safe against the kind of revolution Alex Murphy would have led if more half-dead people like him were constructed and enslaved. Murphy showed that corporate directives alone could not keep a cyborg population in line. So in comes the Replicants who are designed to die and be replaced before they live long enough to develop 'ideas' about not cooperating with company policy.
When the Replicant workforce really gets going, there is legal-political fallout of a different sort, presumably by natural-born humans who don't want their jobs taken by 'pod-people' or by feeling unsafe when or if these Replicants ever stage a revolt. The Replicants get banished from Earth and the 'blade runners' are hired to make sure it stays that way.
Total Recall puts humans on Mars in 2084, and shows us how far brain manipulation can go in that time, with scripted memories of vacations downloaded in a single sitting (just like how Tyrell programmed Rachael with false memories from his dead niece)--though to be fair, the entire film from the time Quaid gets strapped into the chair until the end of the show could be considered part of the vacation script (unless the conversation the techs at Rekall are having about there being a memory cap and not having implanted the vacation memories, are not part of the vacation memories!). We can still surmise the colonies on Mars are real, but anyone who appears in the film after his visit to Rekall may simply be part of the vacation download... We see more elements of sociopathic mega-corporation behavior when Cohaagen is allowed to control air flow to forestall rebellion. And in this movie, another AI goes berserk when the JohnnyCab malfunctions; it's a common theme in this universe.
Ultimately the mega-corporations settle for building true Synthetics: Ash, Bishop, Call, and David.
All these movies present a 'grunge tech' look (albeit limited by 1970s and 1980s-era set dressing) which, combined with routine mega-corporate malfeasance and the treatment of employees and underlings more as slaves and disposable assets rather than real people with rights, presents a fairly coherent dystopia where the strong control the weak (whether that's Predators vs. Xenomorphs, or humans vs. Replicants and Synthetics, or corporations vs. colonists). There are several other links we could make between the source materials of this shared universe: BLADE RUNNER + ALIEN: "In developing his character [David for Prometheus], Fassbender avoided watching the android characters of Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986), and instead studied the replicants in Scott's 1982 science fiction film Blade Runner, with a focus on Sean Young's character Rachael, whose "vacancy" and longing for a soul interested him." (Wikipedia: Sciretta, Peter (June 8, 2012). "Interview: Michael Fassbender Talks 'Prometheus'". /Film. Archived from the original on June 16, 2012. Retrieved June 9, 2012.) --from one of the wikis. ALIEN + PREDATOR:
Jerry Lambert (Predator 2) is an ancestor of Pvt. Hudson (Alien 2), both played by Bill Paxton; comic relief runs in the family. It is possible that Joan Lambert (Veronica Cartwright, Alien 1) is also a descendant of Jerry Lambert, making her a distant cousin perhaps of Private Hudson.
Al Dillon (Carl Weathers, Predator 1) shares the same last name with Leonard Dillion (Charles S. Dutton, Alien 3). Distant relatives?
There’s just something about Leona Cantrell (Maria Conchita Alonzo, Predator 2) that makes me want to think of her as a great-great-grandmother of Vasquez (Janette Goldstein, Alien 2). Personalities are similar, facial features are vaguely similar, and they are both hard-as-nails women. The actresses could be confused with each other at first glance.
Stef (RoboCop 2) is an ancestor of PFC Drake (Alien 2), both played by Mark Rolston.
Shane Black appears in two movies of this Shared Universe: Rick Hawkins, a member of Dutch Schaefer’s commando team (Predator 1) and Detroit PD officer Donnelly (Robocop 3). Donnelly could easily be a nephew or cousin of Hawkins, where Hawkins was his mother’s maiden name.
Cohaagen’s enforcer Richter (Michael Ironside, Total Recall) is named the same as Jonas Richter, a similarly unscrupulous starship captain from AVP 2 the video game. Those Richters were always on the wrong side of the law...
Anne Lewis (Nancy Allen, RoboCop 1-3), Alex Murphy’s former partner, has the same last name as Taffey Lewis, owner of “The Snake Pit” (Hy Pike, Blade Runner 1). According to the Blade Runner wiki, he is “used to policemen and having little time for them”. Possibly a wayward brother, nephew, or distant relative of Lewis who decided that following in the family’s footsteps was not for him (especially after Anne was killed).
There are two Millers and two Wallaces, one each in AVP 1 and RoboCop 1: Dr. Graeme Miller (Ewen Bremner) and Ron Miller (Mark Carlton); Joe Wallace (James Chutter, AVP 2) and Niander Wallace (Jared Leto, Blader Runner 2). These are fairly common surnames, so these links are not very solid by themselves.
Alex Murphy (Peter Weller, RoboCop 1) shares a last name with Thomas Murphy (Christopher Fairbank, Alien 3). Perhaps Alex Murphy’s son Jimmy was so traumatized by what happened to his father, and what his mother went through trying to cope with Alex / RoboCop inserting himself into his former life, that it threw Jimmy and his descendants into a generational cycle of maladaptive antisocial behavior which finally got Thomas Murphy sentenced to exile on the Fiorina 161 prison planet.
Alan 'Dutch' Schaefer (Predator 1) is an ancestor of Douglas Quaid (Total Recall), both played by Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Dick Jones (RoboCop 1) is an ancestor of Vilos Cohaagen (Total Recall), both played by Ronny Cox.
I don't have anything to back it up with, but in my headcanon Clarence Boddiker (Kurtwood Smith, RoboCop 1) is related to Richter (Michael Ironside, Total Recall). The two actors have been so easy for me to confuse, they look similar, they talk similar. In this universe, they're both evil sociopaths. So it wouldn't be surprising if they weren't related somehow.
As for the sci-fi movie Outland (1981), with Sean Connery (Marshal William T. O'Niel) and Frances Sternhagen (Dr. Marian Lazarus), its connections to this shared universe are tenuous but I hope you'll be obliging:
Outland also features an overworked underclass, a mega-corporation that owns everything, drug use out of control as in RoboCop 2, and all the technology and film sets have the same 'grunge tech' look as the Aliens movies do.
Marie Lazarus (Jill Hennessey, RoboCop 3) could be an ancestor of Dr. Marian Lazarus (Frances Sternhagen, Outland). Their last name is uncommon, their first names quite similar, and they are both in the medical profession.
There are three Mortons: One of Marshal O’Niel’s female deputies was named Morton (Anni Domingo, Outland), and there's Bob Morton (Miguel Ferrer, RoboCop 1) who once took the Mayor of Detroit and others hostage before being arrested by RoboCop. So “Anni” Morton might be Bob Morton’s great-great granddaughter somehow. There's also Sapper Morton, who is a Replicant (Nexus-8) in Blade Runner 2. Maybe Sapper derived his surname from that family?
In both the Aliens + AVP continuity and Leviathan, the main monster assimilates the DNA of its victims.
As with many other films in this Shared Universe, Leviathan includes a soulless, cold-hearted megacorporation (Tri-Oceanic).
In Leviathan, Peter Weller appeared as Steven Beck as a contemporary member of the Murphy clan from the RoboCop films.
Tom Woodruff, Jr. played the monster in both Alien 3 and Leviathan. I wouldn't go so far as to say that the Leviathan is in any way related to the Xenomorph species without having to invoke Predator genetic manipulation. We have never seen the Predator race go "on safari" underwater, but that doesn't mean they never do or never have. But who knows? Maybe some Xenomorph DNA from an ancient Predator hunt on Antarctica found its way into the ocean and took over a cephalopod creature which eventually became the Leviathan monster of the 1989 film, but this is just a theory to explain why no one had ever encountered such a creature before.
Eugene Lipinski appears in both Outland (as an employee of Con-Am who commits suicide while suffering from psychosis due to drug abuse) and in Leviathan (as a Russian captain), which is good enough for me to suggest these two characters are also related somehow.
MISCELLANEOUS: This one isn't really a crossover item, but I wanted to include it anyway: Royce (Adrien Brody, Predator 3) and Ramirez (Richard Chaves, Predator 1) have such an uncanny resemblance to each other that I had to make sure they were not the same actor. These two characters might be related too. Suppose the Predators had collected Ramirez’s genetic signature, happened to locate another military member of his family that was a partial match on their prey database, and that’s why they picked Royce? Lastly, the way the human body reacts to negligible atmospheric pressure in this universe is slightly off from real life. When the human body is exposed to low air pressure or hard vacuum, it bloats like crazy and eventually explodes. This happens in both Total Recall and Outland. This is really the fault of bad understanding on the writers' part of how the human body behaves in a hard vacuum, but since the same notable mistake happens twice, I'm including it here. REFERENCES:
EDITED TO ADD: I did some reorganization of the many, many links between the different films and video games that make up this shared universe, to bring a little order to what began as a rather disorderly exposition.
2020.06.22 17:16 DiR910People need to stop hating on Priyanka and Nick
A bit of background. I'm not an old Jonas Brothers fan. My younger sister is the new group of fans and while I don't actively listen to them, I think their music (the new ones atleast) is pretty fun. I've noticed A LOT of people (especially on Reddit) seem to have issues with the Nick's relationship and while it's pretty common in fandoms, there's an unusual amount of hate here? Like what is the issue? The 10 year age gap? I don't see the problem. Like 10 years isn't even all that much and many relationships with even larger age gaps have worked very well. The fact that they got married within a year of dating? Again, not all that uncommon. A very common thing I heard is that their relationship looks very fake and whatnot. But a quick glance through each of their Instagram feeds and tbh....it's like any other celebrity couple. Yeah definitely more thought out than your average non celebrity person on Instagram, but nothing even remotely screams PR and fake to me. Infact I'd say they seem very happy together. Their individual feeds are not obsessed with mushy pics of them either. Looking back at their older threads, a lot of people said " I'd give it 3 months" and there's even a thread about them supposedly divorcing after 3 months. But it's been more than 2 years now and they seem just as strong. Like honestly, I don't see any difference between them and Sophie and Joe. (PS...I really liked Priyanka's performance in A Kid Named Jake and Quantico) Opinions?

2020.05.29 03:15 dragonthingyr/AFL Compendium of History – AFL Collapse: How the Port Adelaide Football Club collapsed horrifically, but then sort of recovered maybe?
Greetings everybody. The topic I wanted to cover for the History Compendium is inspired by SB Nation's Collapse, a really interesting series on how a sports team or athlete can collapse quickly, and go from a strong team, to a weak one. I don't even follow most of the sports they discuss, but I still find it interesting, as rarely does such a collapse happen due to a single event; normally it takes multiple events to truly make it set in, such as Sega dropping out of the console manufacturing business. Port Adelaide in the 2000s was a strong team, a traditional powerhouse of South Australian Football that took it to the Vics and showed them what they could do, making two Grand Final appearances in four years and consistently making finals. They had a team coached by football royalty Mark Williams, and players such as future Richmond coach Damien Hardwick, future Gold Coast coach Stuart Dew, future Port Adelaide coach Matthew Primus, Darryl Wakelin, Domenic Cassisi, Shaun Burgoyne, Gavin Wanganeen, Warren Tredrea and Josh Carr would win their club its 35th senior premiership (after its 34 in the SANFL before joining the AFL). They even had Alastair Clarkson, future four-time Premiership coach at Hawthorn, as their midfield coach. But despite this on-field and off-field strength, within just a few years they would become the biggest laughing stock in the competition, source of the greatest footy meme ever, and some even wondered if they even deserved to be in the AFL. The power to win, 1997-2004 Port Adelaide entered history as the only non-Victorian team to join the AFL, unlike the other non-Victorian sides, who were either created from scratch, merged with a Victorian team, or relocated from Victoria as Sydney did. Port Adelaide is one of the oldest and proudest clubs in Australian Football history (in the AFL, only Melbourne, Geelong, Carlton and North Melbourne are older), and since their formation in 1870, have consistently been the strongest and most successful team in the SANFL. Their application to join the AFL was a key ingredient in the merger between Fitzroy and the Brisbane Bears, as the AFL desired a second team in Adelaide. Port Adelaide joined the AFL using a mix of players from other AFL clubs, South Australian zone selections, their own SANFL players, and concession draft picks. This allowed them to quickly cement themselves in the competition; from 1999-2007, they made finals each year (except 2000 and 2006). The club became a dominant force in the early 2000s, but despite this, gained an infamous reputation for choking. In 2001, they finished 3rd with 16 wins, but went out in straight sets to eventual premier Brisbane and to Hawthorn. In 2002, they finished 1st with 18 wins, but lost their qualifying final to Collingwood, who had 13. They won their semi final against Essendon, but then lost their preliminary final against eventual premier Brisbane. In 2003 they finished 1st, again with 18 wins, but lost their qualifying final to Sydney, who had 14. They won their semi final against Essendon, but then lost their preliminary final against Collingwood. The pressure was immense; seemingly the club had blown its chances to make the most out of its talented list, and it was possible that this amazing list would become a wasted opportunity. But in 2004, after finishing with its third consecutive minor premiership, they blew away the haters, and won their qualifying and preliminary finals (including a heart stopper against St Kilda), reaching the AFL Grand Final for the first time, but crushingly, without their captain Matthew Primus, who had sustained an ACL injury. Up against the threepeat Brisbane Lions, who were aiming for their fourth premiership in a row, the Power won decisively 17.11 (113) to 10.13 (73), finally throwing off the image of being chokers. In a famous display, Mark Williams choked himself with his necktie, proving that he was not a choker… by choking himself. In 2001-2004, they had a record of 74-25, one premiership, and six finals losses. Compare this to Hawthorn in 2012-2015, who had a record of 80-21, three premierships, and two finals losses. So while they did win a premiership, and they indeed had the power to win, they didn’t have the power to win when it counted more often. 119 reasons why, 2005-2007 The club slumped in 2005, but still made finals, finishing 8th. Despite this slump, their form later in the year was much stronger than at the start, and this continued as they flogged the Kangaroos (as they were called at the time) 26.8 (164) to 11.11 (77) in Melbourne, to advance to the semi-finals, against their greatest rivals, the Adelaide Crows. Adelaide had finished top of the ladder, but had lost its qualifying final. The two South Australian teams prepared to face off in the Ultimate Showdown, a derby that had greater stakes than any previous game the two sides had played against each other before or since. The game started evenly, with Adelaide leading 4.7 (31) to 3.6 (24) at half-time but what had been an even first half quickly descended into a slaughter comparable to Order 66, as Adelaide outscored them by 76 points in the second half, defeating Port Adelaide 18.15 (123) to 5.10 (43). The 2005 season was Primus’ last, and he retired, but stayed at the club as an assistant coach. The 2006 season was a disappointment, the club that had been strong for much of the 2000s finishing 12th. But the club had a resurgence in 2007, finishing 2nd with 15 wins, behind the juggernaut that was the 2007 Geelong Cats. Port Adelaide won a close qualifying final against West Coast, and blew away the Kangaroos in the preliminary final, and reached their second AFL grand final, up against Geelong. Despite Geelong’s very strong season, there was good reason to be on the fence over who would be premiers. They had beaten each other once each in the home and away season, and both sides’ finals campaigns so far were similar; Geelong had flogged the Kangaroos in their qualifying final, but had a nailbiting close win against Collingwood in their preliminary final. The team Port Adelaide fielded had 9 of the players from their 2004 Premiership, as well as a mix of new players, including youngsters such as Justin Westhoff and Travis Boak, father-son Brett Ebert and dancing legend and umpiring hero David Rodan. Port Adelaide raced to an early lead, and by race I mean they kicked two points, until a few minutes later the Cats kicked a point and a goal to get in front. With seven minutes to go in the first quarter, Shaun Burgoyne kicked a goal to bring Port Adelaide’s score to 2.2 (14), and the Power still looked to be in it. But fate had other ideas, and by the time they’d kicked their next score, a goal from Chad Cornes 25 minutes later, Geelong had scored 56 points, and weren’t going to be letting up. The rest of the game was a humiliation, the greatest defeat a team has ever had in an AFL Grand Final, as Geelong were merciless, scoring 24.19 (163) to 6.8 (44), a final margin of 119 points. The huge margin was like a collective bout releasing pent-up frustration; Geelong hadn’t won a premiership since 1963, despite five attempts (in 1967, 1989, 1992, 1994 and 1995). Many felt that Port’s younger players couldn’t handle the scoreboard pressure, which only exacerbated things. Refusing to stop even though Port Adelaide were already dead, eleven of Geelong’s players kicked goals, with Cameron Mooney kicking five, in what commentator Tim Lane called “an orgy of Geelong goal kickers”. The game was a turning point in history, a real door that slides instead of using hinges moment; Port Adelaide went from a team to fear to a laughing stock for much of the next 13 years, while Geelong, a team that was a laughing stock after multiple lost grand finals and poor seasons, became a powerhouse and formed their 2007-2011 dynasty, one of the greatest teams ever assembled. Maybe if they’d kept cat killer and unlikely bulky hero Stewey Dew they’d have had a chance, but who knows? Never tear up our tarps, 2008-2010 Port Adelaide lingered around in 2008-2009, never threatening, but did gain numerous draft picks via trading out Shaun Burgoyne to Hawthorn. Burgoyne, 27 at the time, was having knee troubles, and the fact that Hawthorn gave up Pick 9 as part of the deal looked absurd; what is truly absurd is the fact that as of the 2020 season, Burgoyne is still playing aged 37, and has played more games and won more premierships at Hawthorn than at Port Adelaide. The 2009 off-season was painful for another reason, as Brendon Lade and Peter Burgoyne, the last players from Port Adelaide’s inaugural AFL squad, retired. By 2009, the club had acquired a debt of $5.1 million, and was unable to pay its players. They were denied financial assistance by the AFL, but would later get a $1 million loan from them, and a further $2.5 million debt relief from the SANFL, who owned their licence. With declining crowds at Football Park, Adelaide’s equivalent of Waverley Park, Port Adelaide was reduced to covering vast numbers of empty seats with tarpaulin. While their press release in 2010 claimed that such a move was pioneering and encouraged by global trends, it was just another sign of a club that was in laughable condition and not having an appealing product for their fans and supporters; a club that had won 36 SANFL Premierships could barely get bums on seats. Few were sad when they were eventually put away for good. By round 15 2010, with a record of 5-10, Mark Williams was sacked, and Matthew Primus became caretaker coach. Primus had been a good on-field leader, most obvious with his time as Captain. Primus was expected by many to only serve as a temporary caretaker until a more experienced coach was found, but he won five out of seven games, and was given a two year contract; among the coaches interviewed for the job was Chris Scott, who the very next year would win a Premiership in his first season as Geelong’s coach, and has since kept Geelong as consistent finalists. Port Adelaide had a tradition of only taking on players from the club as coaches, going back to 1949 when Fos Williams crossed over from West Adelaide. Since then Geof Motley played for Port, John Cahill played for Port, Russel Ebert played for Port, and Mark Williams (son of Fos) played for Port, as did Mark’s brother Stephen, who was their first SANFL coach after they joined the AFL. The point is, Port Adelaide was still trying to be steeped in tradition, something becoming increasingly harder to do in the cutthroat professional sports industry. Kane Cornes, by now one of the oldest players in the group, said that he felt confident going into the 2011 season, as they had gained plenty of kids, and seemed to be heading into a bright future; unfortunately, the bright lights by have well been coming from a freight train. Bye bye dignity, 2011-2012 Primus had played with the older players on the list, and knew the others from his time as an assistant. He was therefore not the boss, but one of the boys. And in his attempts to not dog the boys, he took things too easily in his first pre-season as coach. A pre-season trip to the Gold Coast had just one serious training session, the rest of the trip being like a sight-seeing holiday. Compare this to Hawthorn marching the Kokoda track and Gold Coast hiking through Middle-Earth and the difference is clear as day. Due to Gold Coast entering the competition, there were 17 teams, so each round had at least one bye. Gold Coast, who were terrible for other reasons, would be referred to the “the second bye”, due to giving their opponent a free win or two. However, they didn’t account for Port Adelaide. Port Adelaide would suffer the indignity of the first team to lose to Gold Coast, a team who in 2011 had three wins and a percentage of 56.3. The defeat in turn spawned possibly the greatest AFL meme ever made, Port Adelaide v The Bye, a video that will always be funny regardless of how good or bad Port Adelaide actually are. It is a perfect historical document, summarising just how poorly performing they were in 2011. Port Adelaide also finished the season with three wins, but ahead of Gold Coast on percentage. Port Adelaide’s performance was the second most cancerous thing in the 2011 season, behind the substitute rule, which no-one wanted and would be retracted in a few years. The season was statistically the worst they’d had in 141 years, and in round 20, lost to Collingwood by a record margin of 138 points. But this record was short-lived, and Hawthorn would beat them by 165 points the next week. CEO Mark Hatsman and President Brett Duncanson disliked some of the older players, even though Kane Cornes had recently signed a three-year contract extension on good money, and having played nearly 200 games in a row. Primus was under directives to play the kids, which led to a group of players called the Forgotten Seven (Daniel Motlop, Jacob Surjan, Brett Ebert, Danyle Pearce, Steven Salopek and Chad and Kane Kornes). The result was multiple younger players playing games that they weren’t ready for, at the expense of older players who could already contribute. Despite this directive to play kids, the talk in the pre-season was about returning to finals, presumably based on their late 2010 performances under Primus. Primus was unable to have the direct, upfront conversations he needed to have as the senior coach of an AFL team. When dropping players such as Kane Cornes or Danyle Pearce, he wouldn’t tell them they were being dropped; he’d tell them they were being “rested”. Reflecting being dropped the way he was, Kane Cornes stated “I think the plan was almost to humiliate me out of wearing the Port jumper and force me to walk away.” By the end of the 2011 season, things were already becoming even more dysfunctional. Keith Thomas, recently made chief executive, overruled Primus and the rest of the board, who wanted Kane Cornes sacked from the club and his contract paid out. But the club finances couldn’t afford dumping him and paying him the $900,000 he was owed, so the club had a talented old player playing in the SANFL far more then he should, playing at a club whose coach didn’t want him. Dean Brogan and Chad Cornes would be traded to GWS, where they acted as mentors to their mostly youthful squad, a role they easily could have fulfilled at Port Adelaide. But wait, there’s more!
Port Adelaide at the time didn’t have a reserves team; the Port Adelaide Magpies in the SANFL was a distinct entity, and Port Adelaide’s AFL players would be split amongst the various SANFL teams if they weren’t selected.
The club also had the very bad idea to have players beat the shit out of each other with boxing gloves in “punishment sessions” after big losses, such as the Gold Coast game.
Port Adelaide had assistant coach Dean Laidley, based outside of Adelaide, relying on skype sessions for his communications with the players.
Despite finishing second-last, their first pick was Pick 6, due to GWS having the first five picks. Their later picks were also pushed back, making recruiting talented youth via the draft harder.
Some good news finally came at the end of the year, as the AFL and SANFL worked out a plan to give the SANFL control over Port Adelaide, underwrite huge amounts of their debt, and prepare to move their home games to a refurbished Adelaide Oval, a much better, more modern, and centrally located stadium than Football Park. Port Adelaide would be given $3 million a year, per year, for three years. The 2012 season started off okay, and despite multiple poor results, things seemed like they wouldn’t be changing too much the next year. But in round 19, they went up against the Greater Western Sydney Giants, who like Gold Coast the year before, were playing in the first ever season, and were performing terribly; their record at this point was 1-16, compared to Port’s 5-12. All but assured of a contract extension, Primus and Duncanson’s reigns fell apart to a team of 18-year-olds and a few old boys, losing 16.11 (107) to 10.13 (73).; they had given Gold Coast their first ever win, and GWS their second. This was a GWS that finished the year with a record of 2-20 and a percentage of 46.2. The board announced the next day that Duncanson and Primus would not be at the club the next year, and Primus immediately stood down, replaced by Garry Hocking as a caretaker coach. In their next four games, they had a draw and three losses, and seemed to be beyond hopeless, before Ken Hinkley was brought in as coach for the 2013 season, the first coach hire from outside Port Adelaide since 1949. Are we a good team?, 2013-2019 Defying all expectations, the club had a much better season in 2013, with a new strategy from Hinkley, a better coaching structure (including coaches who were actually in Adelaide) and a new emphasis on fitness and hard running. The club returned to finals, finishing 7th, a far cry from their poor performances in recent times. 2013 also saw the club merge with the Port Adelaide Magpies team in the SANFL. When Port Adelaide joined the AFL, the intention was always to leave the SANFL, but a new Port Adelaide Team, disconnected with the Port Adelaide in the AFL, was created to help draw crowds. The two teams were distinct, and the Magpies could no longer play at their traditional home ground of Alberton Oval. The merger meant the like teams from other states, that Port Adelaide would have its own reserves team, and play its AFL players there instead of splitting them up across the SANFL. The move was highly applauded by fans, and led to the possibly endearing, possibly cringy use of Never Tear Us Apart at their games, even though New Sensation is a much better INXS song. Feeling confident of their finals chances, they traded their first pick as part of a deal for wingman Jared Polec. The move from Football Park to Adelaide Oval, the change in off-field staff, better resources, the merger with their SANFL team, and better results led to a resurgence at the club. The club did much better in 2014, making it all the way to the Preliminary Final, only to lose to eventual premiers Hawthorn. Their time since then has been spotty to say the least. The club wanted to trade in a forward who could ruck in order to partner with Matthew Lobbe; they ended up paying their first and second round picks in a trade for Paddy Ryder from Essendon, who ended up being more of a ruckman who occasionally plays forward. The trade failed to help the club, who went from hot stuff in 2014, to just missing the finals, placing 9th in 2015 with a record of 12-10. Two of their losses were against bottom 2 Brisbane and Carlton, costing them dearly. The club tried trading hard again, giving up their first pick in a deal for tall forward Charlie Dixon from Gold Coast. However they once again just missed finals, finishing 10th with a record of 10-12, with Paddy Ryder and Angus Monfries being suspended for the season due to the Essendon supplements saga. Lobbe, their other main ruckman, was injured for most of the season, and recent recruit Dougal Howard did his ACL while rucking for them. Their main forward Jay Schulz succumbed to age, and Charlie Dixon failed to deliver consistent results. Unlike the previous few drafts, they emphasised drafting youth in 2016, and traded their future first round pick to help do so, and ended up with picks 16 (Todd Marshall), 18 (Sam Powell-Pepper), 32 (Joe Atley) and 33 (Willem Drew) in the first 2 rounds of the draft. Port Adelaide returned to finals in 2017, with Polec, Dixon and Ryder on fire, and finished 5th. Despite this, their strong record had a poor trend; against teams that didn’t make finals, they had 12 wins and 1 loss (against Melbourne, who finished 9th), but against teams that did make finals, they had 2 wins (against Sydney, who lost their first six games due to injury and poor form, and West Coast, who finished 8th) and 7 losses. This inability to defeat top 8 teams would prove cruelly true in their elimination final. West Coast, who as the 8th place team was the weakest finalist that year, got a big lead early but Port was able to level the scores. In the last minute of the fourth quarter, their last shot to get in front was blocked by Eric MacKenzie in the greatest defensive spoil I have ever seen, literally crashing into the behind post to get the ball out of bounds without rushing a behind, not that Baz felt it was worth mentioning. The siren went with scores level, so for the third time in AFL finals history, a game went to extra time. Port stormed in front (get it, like a lightning bolt?), but it all came to naught as Luke Shuey, who may or may not have shrugged a tackle to win an underserving free kick, kicked a goal after the siren, sending West Coast through the to the Semi Finals, and Port Adelaide crashing in a heap after one of the most remarkable games in Australian football history. In the off-season, the club faced two challenges; lacking a first round pick due to trading it the previous year, they traded their second pick for Jack Watts, and stocked up on free agents Tom Rockliff, Steven Motlop, Trent Mackenzie and Jack Trengove. You see, its really funny because Watt is a unit of measurement of power, and Power is the name used by Port Adelaide in the AFL. That’s why its so funny. The other challenge was that multiple fringe players requested to leave the club, including Matthew Lobbe, who had been squeezed out by Ryder and Dixon, Brendon Ah Chee, Jarman Impey, Aaron Young, Logan Austin and Jackson Trengove all left, with Trengove and Impey’s departures in particular stinging. In 2018 they started strong, winning 11 of their first 15 games. But then Port did what Port does, and they won just 1 of their next 7, finishing 10th with a record of 12-10. This included another after-the-siren loss to West Coast. In 2019, they finished 10th again, with a record of 11-11. But in these seasons, they defied their recruitment trends for much of the 2010s. The club traded out multiple best 22 players, including Paddy Ryder, Dougal Howard, Jared Polec, Chad Wingard and Jasper Pittard in order to draft talented juniors who were ready-made for AFL football. They drafted three players in the top 30 in 2018 (Conner Rozee, Zak Butters and Xavier Duursma) and another four in the top 30 in 2019 (Miles Bergman, Mitch Georgiades, Dylan Williams and Jackson Meade). Port had the least games played by 24-27 year-olds of any club in 2019. These kids are some of the most exciting in the competition, but their recruitment was taken by many as a sign that the club, which had recently been pushing hard for finals, was trying to enact a youth policy again, with the only big recruit from another club being free agent Scott Lycett. Only time can tell. 150 years young, in summary Port Adelaide was a strong team in the 2000s, despite their choking at critical moments, and won a well-deserved premiership in 2004, but the combination of aging stars, a terrible club culture, mismanagement from the board, a lack of resources, and financial difficulty led to the club stagnating and enduring a period of poor performances rarely seen in the history of the modern AFL. In 2011-2012, the years under Matthew Primus, the club had a record of 8-35-1, endured their worst ever loss twice in two weeks, and seemed like a basket case with no hope. If it weren't for the entrance of Gold Coast and GWS in this time, they likely would have "won" back-to-back wooden spoons. Despite this, a new chairman, board, president, home ground and reserves alignment helped the club immensely, and returned to be a mid-tier, sometimes finalist, team. What Port Adelaide did in 2013-2014 is remarkable, and in another universe, led to an amazing 2014 premiership. Instead, the club has been disappointing, finishing 9th, 10th, 5th, 10th and 10th since their last finals win in 2014. The club traded its first round picks in 2013-2015 to trade in Jared Polec, Paddy Ryder and Charlie Dixon. Then in 2016, they traded their future first, and made a series of trades to draft multiple players early in the draft. In 2017, with no first round pick, they targeted free agents, and traded in Jack Watts. This inconsistent drafting and recruitment strategy showed a club that couldn’t make up its mind; do they want kids for the future, or developed players for a flag push? There is also immense pressure from Port Adelaide’s supporters to do something about Ken Hinkley. The coach who nearly pulled off a miraculous 2014 Premiership has instead brought the team to several years of mediocrity, sometimes being good, sometimes being bad, and only making finals once since. The “Sank Hinkley” topic is currently on its third thread on bigfooty, which started in May 2019, currently has 957 combined pages as of the writing of this article. One of Port Adelaide’s many longstanding traditions was that the captain always wears the number 1 guersey, which dates back to Clifford Keal in 1924. However in 2019, the club had two co-captains intead, with Tom Jonas wearing number 42, and Ollie Wines wearing number 16. Flames of supporter anger over this break in tradition was further fanned by Wines dislocating his shoulder in a pre-season waterskiiing accident, and Jonas became the sole captain, wearing number 1, for the 2020 season. Port Adelaide announced its 150th anniversary celebrations for 2020, an immense accomplishment, but they found ways to make it lolworthy; they announced a new logo that may have been ripped off and new beanies with the date wrong (they were formed in 1870, not 1820). Things may be uncertain, and it is yet to be seen if Port can improve themselves from here, but something that is certain is that Port Adelaide is a proud, traditional club with a rich history, and passionate loyal supporters. But also one that is occasionally very funny by accident. I hope people enjoyed this AFL Collapse. I'm keen on possibly writing more, such as St Kilda's collapse after the 2010 grand final, and Sydney in the late 1980s. I also want to know if there's anything innaccurate in the post, or anything I missed that would be useful information to have. I've also written collapse articles on Brisbane after their threepeat, Essendon after the 2001 Grand Final, and Carlton after the 2012 season.

2020.04.13 01:48 JF_112[THREAD] All my Leafs video clips since the start of the quarantine
I can’t believe this series is now done after dedicating the last four months or so to posting one highlight a day on this page. Thank you everyone who sent in submissions throughout and checked out the posts! Whether this is your first time here or have seen them all, this wouldn’t have been possible without your support. Although it started around the time of some tough circumstances, I hope this put a smile on your face as you waited patiently for hockey to come back! The series began on March 15th, 2020 and ended on August 1st, 2020. EDIT: This series is set to conclude on August 1st, the day before the Leafs return to the ice! So if you haven’t already, please send me your suggestions for what you would like me to share!! Hey guys! A lot of you have enjoyed the series of videos I have been posting each day for the last few weeks and I am very appreciative of that. As the series progresses, it will inevitably be harder to keep track of everything I've posted. This is why I have made the post you're looking at to collect all of the previous entries and put them in one place! Each day, I will update the post with the latest clip in the series so that you are up to date on what has been shared already. In terms of submissions, you're more than welcome to post them here. You can also message me them (a few of have already along with some kind messages :D) I hope this makes it easier for everyone to keep track and kill some time looking at some of the best clips featuring the Leafs! This will likely be pinned to the top of the sub so you can easily access it each day.
2020.04.09 20:20 jamesthegillWhich "indie record" does Taylor Swift consider cooler than hers?
This is not nearly as scientific or thorough as traveler81's thorough and engaging dive into who "So It Goes" is about, on the Taylor subreddit. It's a great read, but as it blows mine out of the water, please don't read it until you've read this as mine just pales in comparison! Nearly eight years ago Taylor Swift confirmed her shift from country to a more pop sound with the release of Red’s lead single, We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together. Despite the song not containing the title in full (either adding an extra “ever” or two, or omitting the word entirely when spoken in the bridge) it became Taylor’s first top ten single since Love Story and Red laid the groundwork for her imperial phase with the next album, 1989. A throwaway line at the end of the second verse has always nagged at me. A sarcastic line about the subject of the song going off and listening to “indie records much cooler than [hers]”. Taylor’s delivery shows how highly she thinks of these records; the implication that he would rather be listening to someone else than her music suggests an act of cheating without infidelity. What were these records that got Taylor’s goat? Could a process of elimination narrow it down? Does it really matter when we’re going to die of plague this year? Is this anything more than sheer conjecture? Let’s find out. I. The Protagonist. First things first I’m the realist it would be sensible to work out who she is singing about. I’m using he/him pronouns because a) none of the potential candidates have asked to be referred to with other pronouns and b) Taylor herself refers to him as he (“Ugh, so he calls me up and he’s like ‘I still love you’”). It is safe to assume that every romantic interest that she split up with before the release of Speak Now in October 2010 would have been dealt with, song-wise, on that album - so that rules out Taylor Lautner (Back To December), Joe Jonas (Better Than Revenge), the late Corey Monteith (Mine) and John Mayer (Dear John). While Holy Ground is apparently about Joe Jonas, it’s more wistful and positive than WANEGBT, so logic suggests that they’re about different people. So, who are the potential bachelors? Looking at internet timelines of Taylor’s alleged relationships, four names fit the timeframe of release dates - Speak Now in October 2010 to WANEGBT in August 2012. Both Eddie Redmayne and Zac Efron appear as rumours based around Taylor’s fledgling film career (auditioning for Les Mis and starring in The Lorax, respectively) but both men have strenuously denied dating her. Redmayne I’m taking at his word; his public profile would’ve had a notable boost from being attached to her (the Hiddlestone effect) so for him to eschew such an improvement in reputation, not even hinting or suggesting at it happening, probably means nothing romantic happened there. Efron I’m less certain about, as his experience with a public relationship ending in late 2010 (with Vanessa “some people are gonna die” Hudgens) might have made him reluctant to start something even more public so soon afterwards. While the two were pretty cute together making light of the rumours on an episode of Ellen, there’s not been any pictorial evidence of the two together and there doesn’t appear to be any animosity between them since WANEGBT was released. Given the level of spite involved in the lyrics, despite being hidden beneath a playful tone, I can’t believe they’d be that friendly afterwards. From what I can see online, Taylor had only two significant confirmed relationships in the time frame. One of these was Connor Kennedy, son of Robert Kennedy, who I assume is related to the former President Jeff K. Somewhat paradoxically, the pictures of the two together that make him eligible to appear in this section also rule him out of the search - the linked article states that the two were seen together on July 29th. Even if the relationship ended on that day, for Taylor to write and record a song about the breakup, turn it round in enough time to make the August 13th deadline and scrap plans for whatever the lead single for Red was supposed to be, seems pretty unlikely. Reports suggest that the pair split in early autumn - prior to Red’s release, but after WANEGBT was put out into the world. It might be about Connor but that would probably require access to a time machine - while I wouldn’t put it past her, if I start including that hypothesis then this whole thing goes out the window. The evidence does seem to suggest that the relationship written about in the song is with Jake Gyllenhaal. His is the only significant relationship in the timeline, from October 2010 to January 2011, and several other songs on the album have been hinted to be about him too. Taylor’s never one for outright confirming who songs are about, preferring to leave enough breadcrumbs for fans/journalists/interested parties to put things together themselves while leaving herself enough plausible deniability to wriggle out of the situation if things go sour. (Francis Urquhart) would be so proud.) The Last Time and The Moment I Knew have references to him missing her birthday to promote Love And Other Drugs, and All Too Well heavily alludes to him (in particular, the scarf, and a thanksgiving dinner at Maggie Gyllenhaal’s house). In the WANEGBT video we see an exchange of scarf (at 2:11), further strengthening the connections. The only other potential candidate is Harry Styles. I Knew You Were Trouble is strongly believed to have been written about him; Taylor has confirmed that Treacherous and IKYWT were written about the same person, and there’s some evidence linking the hidden message in the album booklet pertaining to this song and Harry Styles. I feel comfortable ruling Harold out as the subject of WANEGBT, though, as the two didn’t date until after Red was released, and I’ve already explained my reluctance to discuss time travel in this piece. She did make this slightly trickier by singing the bridge in an alleged British accent after she split with him, though. I’m confident that WANEGBT is about Jake Gyllenhaal. II. The Artist. Now that we’ve narrowed down to the antagonist of the song, what could he be listening to? While his height is more of a mystery, Jake is also still somewhat cagey about his music tastes. Given his much publicised relationship with Taylor he may be reluctant to discuss anything relating to the music industry in interviews, for fear of giving an easy opening to said relationship being brought up, but he’s mentioned music on occasion. A 2009 interview with a Santa Monica radio station, while promoting Brothers, threw up some suggestions - Bruce Springsteen, Burl Ives, Danny Kaye and Saint-Saens, none of whom could really be described as “indie”. An interview with the author of Stronger (later adapted into a movie starring Jake) suggested Iron & Wine as Jake’s favourite band - folkish, but could conceivably be found in the indie section of a record store. He’s also namechecked Vampire Weekend (and appeared in a 2010 video of theirs), Mumford & Sons, The Civil Wars and Temper Trap in the past as well. In an interview with USA Today regarding WANEGBT (and boy is that acronym wearing on me by now) Taylor is seeking revenge on the guy who "made [her] feel like [she] wasn't as good or as relevant as these hipster bands he listened to." By this point Vampire Weekend had scored a number one album so couldn’t really be classed as “hipster”, and Ezra Koenig was later invited to her birthday party in 2014. Mumford & Sons’ debut album had reached number 2 in the US and sold over 3 million albums - again, I don’t think that definition applies here either. While The Civil Wars could fit that description, in the intervening period between the relationship ending and the release of WANEGBT Taylor had recorded a song with them for the soundtrack to The Hunger Games movie - while it wasn’t commercially successful it was popular with critics and I don’t think she’d act negatively towards them in this way. Temper Trap appears to be used as an in-joke with her and Harry Styles - possibly as a way of erasing any memories of them being “Jake’s band” to her - and it’s tough to see her flipping back and forth on her views of the band like a Michael Scott vasectomy. In the introduction I mentioned that the lyric felt like a form of cheating. While researching this piece I realised that Taylor wasn’t the first singer Jake had dated. Even discounting Kirsten Dunst’s cover of The Vapors’ Turning Japanese, one of his early romances was with Jenny Lewis, then lead singer and writer for Rilo Kiley. They were serious enough that he took her along to the premiere of Donnie Darko. For some reason the internet has little information about why an indie musician and then-small time actor split up nearly 20 years ago, but it doesn’t appear to have soured Jake on her completely - in 2009 he was pictured looking very smitten watching Jenny perform at Coachella (while, er, also cuddling his then girlfriend and ex Pleasantville co-star of Jenny’s, Reese Witherspoon). Plus, shortly after splitting from Taylor, Jake took Jenny as his date to the Golden Globes. Now, that might just be that she was in town and a convenient back-up date, but when he’s also seen cavorting with Camilla Belle in the same time frame (she of the cringy “on the mattress” lyric in Better Than Revenge) it really looks as though Jake Gyllenhaal was doing his best to “win” the break-up and anger Taylor. (He was 31 years old at the time.) Rather than take a direct shot back, what better way for Taylor to get her own back than to make a snide comment about them in a song? It’s not an unreasonable assumption that he still listened to Jenny Lewis’s output, given he was literally the heart-eyes emoji in that Coachella picture above. Likewise, it’s a safe bet that Taylor would feel threatened by Jenny Lewis (ex-girlfriend, well respected female singer-songwriter, confident enough to eschew the limelight and not need public approval - that would sting) and also view the Golden Globes date choice as a middle finger up at her. I’m confident that the “indie records much cooler than [hers]” are a veiled jab at Jenny Lewis. III. The Records By 2012 Jenny Lewis had released seven albums - four with Rilo Kiley, one solo, one with The Watson Twins and the most recent one being with her then-boyfriend Jonathan Rice. For that reason we can discount the most recent one - Jenny duetting with her current lover won’t antagonise the new girlfriend of her ex. I’m also ruling out her solo album Acid Tongue, because it’s 50% crap, and the album with the Watson Twins, as it’s too country and gospel - even derisively calling it indie wouldn’t chime true. Spurious reasoning, but we’re down to the four Rilo Kiley albums. Returning to indie, it’s possible Taylor was not talking about the sound but the label - and Warner Bros., label of the fourth and final Rilo Kiley album Under The Blacklight - is anything but independent! For all the quality songs on the record it’s the sound of a band begrudgingly giving things one last try before committing fully to solo careers. As good as it is (and it’s the album I’ve returned to most frequently in the fifteen years I’ve been into the band) it doesn’t have the special something to irk Taylor enough to slam them in a lead single. What of Take-Offs And Landings, then? It’s certainly hipster enough, selling only 40,000 units (which is what Red sold in less than the first 3 days of release), but it seems twee and introspective. There’s songs on there that deal with the end of relationships, sure, but the narrator puts herself at fault for the break-up, rather than the other party. It doesn’t sound confident enough to be a threat. (This was the perfect style to get the burgeoning band an audience though, so it’s not to be knocked!) Rilo Kiley’s second album definitely fits the indie label too - 66,000 sold total, and on a label co-founded by Conor Oberst’s brother. The lyrics on this album are smarter, more descriptive and full of the story-telling that’s a mark of Taylor’s song-writing - only with an occasional tactical curse (the placement of the swearwords in Rilo Kiley’s music is better than any other artist I’ve listened to) that must surely rankle with someone restrained by her lyrics. The build-up to “and sometimes when you’re on, you’re really f**king on” in A Better Son/Daughter is pure artistry. Gun to my head, I’d give this record as the one referred to in WANEGBT - it ticks all the boxes - but for one point. Something that slipped my mind about Taylor until this piece brought it slamming back to me is that she loves the TV show Grey’s Anatomy. She named one of her cats after the main character. Witness her reaction to one of her songs being played on the show. She called up lead actress Ellen Pompeo for a cameo in a music video - sure, Pompeo wasn’t the only big name cameo in that video by any stretch, but she was one of the few who weren’t presented as being part of Taylor’s “squad”, and it was (at the time) her first non-Grey’s acting job in TEN YEARS. So to have her boyfriend’s ex-girlfriend’s band being played in the pilot of her favourite show, the ex that he’s clearly never gotten over, the one who seems to excel at everything Taylor strives to do with minimal perceived effort - that’s got to stick in her teeth! And that’s why for all of her success, all of her stardom and glory, I firmly believe Taylor Swift will forever consider “Portions For Foxes” much cooler than her songs.

2020.04.01 00:19 Lurtz_Of_Orthanc[H] Tons of Polys, Sets, Figs ft. Fellowship & 2020 Holiday BAM [W] Star Wars, Superhero, Middle-earth, misc. minifigs
It's crazy that two weeks have gone by already, but trading is the one thing that a great activity to do while staying inside & social distanced - so it's time for another update to Lurtz’s Trade Post!
Loose minifigs are 100% up-to-date and now feature all 2020 Holiday characters and for the the first time, I now have the FULL Fellowship of the Ring available to trade! In addition to all my other loose Middle-earth items, I am willing to trade all 9 members as a set - this isn't easy to find these days, typically pulls around $150-200 on eBay. I do have singleton extras of specific characters if you only have a few gaps you need to fill, just let me know.
There’s an overwhelming amount here by design - I've made a point to include everything from the simplest polybag or trooper to the most coveted Revan, Ahsoka, even an SDCC figure or two. There's a fair few things here I won't let go unless it's for my highest priority wants - typically, the more valuable the figure, the better the deal is going to need to be. On the flipside, there's much, much more I'm looking to move to collectors who need it more than I do, so for some things I have in excess I'll happily add on a bonus or trade more towards your favor - it all depends on the deal, so don't hesitate to reach out! You never know what the right offer will be. I'm working on importing my entire inventory of sealed items to Brickset for easier visual browsing, so look forward to that in the weeks to come - but as you can guess from the list below, it might take a minute or two!
Minifigures for trade - generally in good working order, no cracks or loose joints. 99% are as-is and are thus pictured without accessories for the most part, but I can track down specifics on request depending on the trade, especially common lightsabers, blaster etc. This is also just the tip of the iceberg - my full collection goes much, much deeper, so if you're looking for something you don't see here, just ask!
All are new and sealed.

970cm00 Medium Legs - Dark Bluish Gray, Dark Blue, and especially Dark Brown - Dark Brown are a #1 priority, actively looking for multiple of these. Minifigure heads - strongly prefer one-sided over two-sided, looking for anything from the past ~9 years or so (older stuff lacks detail), variety preferred - exclusively seeking any/all FLESHTONES, not anything yellow. Always open to interesting offers even if it's not listed, particularly for Superheroes, Star Wars, Middle-earth... or anything licensed really with interesting/useful minifigures is something I'll consider!

The court has lifted its injunction and the following decision has passed @Minister @[1000%] The one, Only, THE OG AG Noting the intent of the authors, but finding the law in place repugnant to both the aim of the writers and the constitution, technically allowing full control of trade routes to the governor of Kobe Nova, which is clearly unreasonable regulation, the Supreme Court of Arabia rules with the defendant in a 2-0 vote. Section 2.2 of the Kobe Nova Special Administrative Region Act is struck down as unconstitutional, and the court heavily encourages the legislature to rewrite the law as more befitting to the intent of the authors, which would follow the term "reasonable regulation".
